"WHAAAAAAATTT?!?! I CAN'T HEAR YOU, WADE'S TRUCK IS TO FREAKING LOUD!!!"

I don't think that'll be much of an issue legally speaking, but I think I'll bring some earplugs just in case... Rigs need to be street legal as we'll be travelling on forest service roads to the trails, you could potentially be cited if we get stopped by a ranger or wasp.

So *ahem* in your opinion *cough* is the exhaust street legal? *aaa-choo!!!*

The rules for the trails in the area are that the rig must be licensed for street or must have a current ORV tag. Spark arresters and mufflers must be in place as well. If it's street licensed, you can drive it on FS19, the Little Naches Road. If it has an ORV tag, you must trailer it.

It's going to depend upon how loud you are talking about. If it's too loud, it's going to attract rangers and not many people are going to want to be in the same group with you.

I should also mention that historically, the weekend we are having the event is a big on rangers because of the fire danger.

Wade? Wade who? Just kiddin Wade I am all about loud and abnoxious exhausts. I will be jealous of yours being mine isn't as loud as it should be. Oh and tell Ranger Rick I am legal in their book but don't tell the Troopers about my lack of Mud flaps if I don't get them installed in time for YJ.

Hmm...might be able to whip up a few sandbag lockers at the trail-head for a good deal. Anyone looking for one see me to get you fixed up...

Actually, I'm even thinking of a new product, called the "rock-locker". It's still in development, so I can't say how it works...

I have a couple of poseur shots but Smegal and Ape took all the action shots so I have been waiting to see theirs.

Do you want to get the locker question or should I?

Well, for a rookie, your rig has a good deal of capability.

A locker keeps both wheels (rear or front...depending on which diff. the locker is in) moving at the same time, no matter how much traction there is.

A Sand-bag Locker TM gives you a little bit more articulation in the rear because of the weight...effectively giving you more traction. Results may vary, use under doctor supervision, etc...

I'll buy one! Heh-heh!

Oh, BTW, I did the pre-run with open diffs, but I've been there before and had confidence in my back up!

Yup, been through there with street tires at stock height...no damage.

...but the terrain varies each year...keeps us on our toes...

Has anyone ever welded the pinion gears?

I have heard of folks welding the pinion gears so they could not turn. Have any of you ever done this? Cheap lockers... Might cause tire wear if you plan to turn a lot.

actually what they do is weld the spider gears together not the pinion gears, if you welded the pinion gears i dont think that you would be able to drive at all....talk about no tire wear then!

I had always thought it was the spider gears. When I saw the http://auto.howstuffworks.com/differential.htm webpage and their explaination of how an open diff works, I noticed that the pinion gears rotated when the axles needed to turn at different speeds. So, I fingured that if the pinion gears were stationary, the axles would have to move together. Look at the illustrations for the open diff on that site.

ok i see what you are talking about, the spider gears and the pinion gears are actually welded together to make a locker not just the spider gears....we were both kinda right i guess

All of those little gears in there are referred to as the "spider gears", nobody calls them pinion or side gears.

Hi Shane,

Well somebody calls them that if you look at that website

Kidding... I wondered why I did not see anything labeled as spider gears...
