Ouray In February

The wife and I are planning a short trip to Ouray, Colorado (coming from Albuquerque). I've been doing a little research on trails in the area, etc. But it seems that due to the weather several trails are closed. I'd like to hear back from those of you who have been in the Durango/Ouray area during the winter months. What should we expect???

What should you expect? PAVED and regularly plowed roads may not be passable with the snow they're getting. We have some trips planned down there this summer - I hope the snow is cleared enough by then!

For darn sure, you don't want to be going anywhere by yourself - people DIE in those conditions.

I would say, look around, have a fun trip, identify places you want to go when the weather is better!

Thanks TC. Having never been up there (past Durango anyways) I wasn't sure what to expect... We'll definately have to put of any trails until summer.

Nearby Silverton Mountain ski area is reporting a base of 110" with a major storm rolling in as I type. Could be another 36" by mid-week. Ouray is a great place to visit in the winter. Relax in the hot springs and talk to some people about what trails to run when you return.

Yeah...seriously, you might be lucky to get over the pass on the paved road this time of year.

There are some great trails up that way but I have been there in April and was still snowed in. So...I'd say go to Ouray anyway...try to find an open restaurant and take in the freaking awesome beauty of that place!
