I want to join the club. Should I buy this truck?

Hello every one,

I've always wanted an '85 "Marty Mcfly" truck. I've kept an eye out for something to fix up and I think I've found my truck, here it is:

He also sent me pictures of the underside:

It has a 22r when I'd prefer a 22re but the old guy that had it kept an old school notebook. Every fueling, oil change and maintenance done for the 110,000 miles he had it. So what do you guys think?

I hope you plan to go see it in person. I'm guessing in Maine there aren't many old Toyotas around. I hope it's less than $2000 in that condition. If the owner took really good care of it it's worth considering. If he doesn't have the receipts for work it's the same as not having done them. Take a pick or screwdriver and prod the frame and see if you have any break through. If everything else is great I'd say you need to take immediate action with the frame. Clean it, wire brush the worst areas and use something like POR on it.

At 110k if he hasn't done the timing chain you will need to do it immediately. A dealer will charge about $700, an independent garage about half that. If you do a search here and you feel comfortable doing it yourself it's pretty cheap for the parts. But the $700 bill should be a negotiating point.

He does have receipts for everything. In the Craigslist add above the pictures he's asking $4500 but he said he might take $4000. That's not bad for around here. My only other option is to go through the cost and trouble of shipping a southern truck up here.

Did he park it underwater? I lived back east so I know about the salt but those shackles are crazy.getting the bushings out will take an act of god.

Price is high IMO for a standard cab but you know the maine market better than others.

That's what my buddy from Northern Maine would call "Mint" :-)

And that's my New York City self would call way too rusted a frame for the asking price. It makes the very low mileage seem almost irrelevant.

Definite Screwdriver test material...
