Advice On Value of 3rd Gen

So I am comtemplating getting a 3rd Gen 4Runner. I have found a 1996 SR5 V6 5 speed and no E-Locker. I wouldn't even consider it if it wasn't a 5 speed. Part of my itch to get a 4Runner is I have a front diff and complete E-Locker axle waiting for install if the opportunity presents itself ... justification for purchase...right?! It has 193,000 miles on it and is in "Good" condition according to how KBB divides the conditions. There is no record of a timing belt replacement and the sticker isn't on the case. His bottom dollar is $3,500 but it books just under $2,800 as a private party sale. What do you guys think it is worth? I know some people pay more than book for these things if they really want/need them but I don't feel the need as it will be a 2nd vehicle for me. Thanks in advance for any thoughts or opinions!

I would think $3500 is a pretty good deal, 5 speeds are somewhat rare and they usually can fetch a bit more. I would definitely look it over though and make sure it wasn't really abused, check fluids and see if the owner has any maintenance records at all. But yeah seems like a good price to me if it all checks out.

Rust?

For me, rust, or lack of, is a huge issue. No rust? Buy it. Rusty bolts & underside will drive you crazy as long as you own it.

You pretty much nailed it when you said it depends on just how bad the buyer wants it compared to just how bad and soon the seller needs the money:jessica:

How many 5 spd 3rd gen runners are out there? That truck is worth whatever you are willing to pay. Its hard to find a 1st gen here in good shape for 3500

About 3.5% of all 3rd gens are manuals. That is if you count 2001 and 2002 as they weren't even available in the last 2 years. I went and looked at the 4Runner today and it was kind of a bondo buggy and a lot of rust on the chassis as expected. For someone wanting a trail rig it would be ok. I ended up not even driving it. Thanks for everyones input.
