About to buy a 4runner, question about trans/transfer case, and if its a good deal!
So I have my eye on a 1988 4runner, its a 22re, really clean. However, I noticed the the transfer case shifter was a lot farther back than it should have been. I asked the owner and he said that the transmission was replaced with one from a 1989. Did the owner put the original transfer case on the forward shift trans? Will that cause any problems? And could I fix it by getting a forward shift conversion kit from Marlin? Just trying to be thorough I dont want to end up with someone else's junk. But if it is just as simple as using a top shift conversion, then I wont feel so bad.
Here are some pics of what I was talking about.

While I am here, I will ask, do you guys think this is a good deal? It has 250,000 on the clock, but a new "from toyota" 22re, Reman'd w56 from a 89. new owner put new tires, brakes, shocks, "suspension components", windshield, alternator, fuel tank, fuel lines, fuel pump, fuel injectors, and some other things, but I cant remember off the top of my head. The current owner bought it from his brother (who is a mechanic at BMW) and his brother bought it from a friend (that is also a mechanic at BMW). That guy bought it new in 88. Its a DLX model, the driver seat has been replaced with a recaro racing seat
Anyway the interior is not much to write home about, but the exterior it almost perfect! The paint is original! only a couple spots that could use some work. Anyways he wants $5,000 and is not coming off of it. He said if he does not sell it for $5,000 he will keep it. He told me that he has $6,500 in it. The reason that he is selling it, is because he bought it for his 17 year old son, but last month he got a DUI...
Anyway, its a clean truck, I am a little weary about paying 5,000 for it, but if what he said it all true, its still a good deal.
So do you guys think its a good deal?
here are some pic of the 4runner... She's a beauty!!

well how does it drive???Both 4Hi and low work like they should .as long as the drive train works why do you feel the need to change anything??
If it does not work correct that would lower the price in my book.
Does it make any strange noises ??
What does the engine compartment look like??
$5000.00 for 88 with a 22rec seems it bit expensive but I can`t talk I have $12,000 in a 92
I can understand being in a position to say $ 5000.00 is the price if not I will keep it.

For 5 grand I would say let him keep it but that's just me, interior looks horrible transfer case knob looks junky, front valance trashed back bumper looks bent dents on the hood, back panel and its not an sr5? Sounds like he doesn't want to get rid of it to me. Might take a while to find something else but you can find better for 5 grand.
Man and did he get the carpet off his grandmas house when she recarpeted????

Yeah, I have not driven it yet, Its about 3 hours away. I wish it was closer, but 1st gens dont come around to often where I live, and if they do they are hacked up, or in really bad shape.
The valence and rear bumper dont bother me that much, they dont cost a lot to replace. As far as the interior goes, new seats, and fresh carpet and it will 100 times better.
I am still wondering what I should do, one part says $5,000 is to much for a DLX. And the other side is saying everything I was going to probably have to fix has been fixed already. The price of a clean 1st get has been going up a lot, so maybe I should just jump on this one.
I am going to test drive it, and if it is not what I expected then I'll turn around and come home.
Other thoughts?
