Ya, I dont think it was a bad buy at all, I just dont know if I'm going to flip it for a profit to use to buy parts for the yota, or keep it as a backup wheelin rig, or let a g/f or friend wheel it....
The first step is get it runnin and we can go from there...

150 horse and 245 ft-lbs... and 78 was one of the powerful years! 79-81 were significantly less. But that'll spank a Yota. I can see Cory driving the Jeep now and pawning his Runner off on unsuspecting newbies.

Well heres some pics of the work in progress... First pic, my redneck engineered fuel delivery system. Who can find all the things wrong with this picture:
Clues:
1. there are three cans of intellegence in the photo
2. Look for the hi-tech gravity feed gas system
3. Note the fuel absorbing gm to amc carb adapter
4. Note the 2 cans of fuel absorbtion compensation
5. Note some new wiring due to the previous being a larger fire hazard than clue #3.
My redneck ignition switch:
Thats all the pics I got right now.. will post more as they come. And no, I havent gotten the thing running, I'm sourcing a correct carb for it, the 2x6 absorption factor is giving me some problems.

Did some more work to the thing, and still cant get it started.
Timing is correct, spark is good and consistent, got plenty of fuel delivery, but compression seems low.... I'm thinking the rings may be siezed up so the pistons are sitting in kerosene right now, hopefully that will free it up.

I'm in the middle of a multiport fuel injection install on my '86 CJ. I'm told when I get done it will have the HP of a V8. Hoping to start her up tomorrow.
Good luck with your project...looks like an Automatic, eh!

Tinkered with it a little more, and now its running state is respectable... still a little sputter every now and then, but its to the point where now I can try and see if it drives. Just gotta fix the tranny dipstick first. Went to pull it out and the whole tube came with it, dumping tranny fluid all over the floor.
Also picked up a set of doors for it for a whopping 10 bucks. Even came with the right key, glass, and interior door panels.
