well tnx cory, after reading your post this morning on my way to school i was just driving along not speeding tailgaiting or doing anything illegal (rare) i hear a waaaaammmm and instantly i spot the crack in the windshield and start swearing hahah guess its just inevidable with our FJ's. It was jsut soo weird though because i was atleast 500 feet away from the nearest car that could kick up a rock or somethin...

 

the worst ones usually come from the other side of the freeway or road...they are kicked up from oncomming traffic...

 

Bummer, I sure hope Toyota comes up with a better glass.
In the meantime, insurance companies like mine are going to lose a lotta money paying for new ones.

Many are on their 3rd ones now, and the rig has only been out for a year.

 

I second the PPG glass. I had two in 8 years on my Eclipse and my friend has a PPG windshield on his 3rd gen that's 4 years old and while it is pitted and due for replacement it has just a couple small chips and zero cracks.

 

sry if im a little confused, since the car is under warranty, would the dealer fix it for free or is that an insuarance company isssue? Also, i no every state the laws are different but i heard from somone that in florida windshield replacements are free due to some safety regulation or something. Anyone know anything about that?

 

Not a warranty issue in WA. state.
Glass breakage is covered under insurance.

Good thing I have the extended warranty gig with my insurance, $50 for a $1,300 windshield is a good deal.

Some at work say they have to pay their deductible of $500 or whatever.
I just lowered my comp deductible down to $250 when I called too.

PPG glass is not on the market yet for the FJ.
Only OEM is out.

 

i really this doesnt have much to do with the stregnth of the glass at all... more of a function of the glass being vertial.

Took one hour, then 20 minutes.
They had a crew of two to three guy's working on it together.
They really dug the rig, even the Magnaflow muffler.
The main guy wheels Sami's up at the Naches too.

He scared me, and I guess he does this to a lot of customers.
He said "I have some good news and some bad news, which do you want first?"

I said gimme the good I guess.
"Well the good news is your rig is done, and the bad news is you have to wait 20 minutes for the sealant to dry."

He showed me that trim piece too that needs to be replaced each time a window is done.
It is held on with clips and globs of thick black stuff.
When you pry it off, it dents it.
He tried hard not to, but it is pretty much unavoidable.

 

Sucks that you have to wait a day or 2 for your parts out of here.

When I make my weekly trips to the dealer, if I get there early enough I get my parts that day or the next day by 12!

You saved a ton of money with that $50 deductible!

Many have to pay their full deductible of $250, $500, $1,000, whatever they have for it.

I did not even know I had this glass coverage until my agent told me.

 

In Florida part of you full coverage insurance is comprehensive insurance which covers windshield repairs. usually without any deductibles.

 

I was at a dealership today running some numbers and saw one with crack in the windshield. Not even sold they're getting front window problems!

 

im too am from washington and have a zero deductible on comp, which cvoers glass, im only paying a couple of dollers extra a month to have a zero deductible and its come in handy.
i got the rock chip about the size of a quarter early in the winter , got it repaired the next morning , and no it does not make it invisible, only really keeps it from getting bigger. the repair guy told me smaller ones could be invisible, but every one ive ever seen doesnt.
i opted to get it repaired rather then replace it , only becuase i figured it will get worse by the end of the winter, if i make it with only this chip till past next winter ill hold off too. but i did let my insuirance compnay know about it so there wont be any problems when i do go to repalce it.

Wow that is insane how often the FJ WS breaks! Like Ric said in c-rado you have to do it every year but that is only because of the rocks they use because of snow. 3x in one year? That is crazy!

 

I am staying back from rock hauling rigs now Molly.
I am not even sure where I got that sucker.

But since this windshield sits at near vertical, everything is amplified.
I red over on fjcruiserforums a guy was caught in a bug storm, and the sound was amplified with the way the window sits and was pretty freaky.

I do not have to worry about that here in WA. state though.

On a side note...
Just got done vacuuming out the rig, and two QWest technicians were outside here checking out the rig.
One of them just bought a Voodoo Blue FJ, and was wondering about my lift.
Perhaps he will join up here.

 

Glad you got fixed up OK, Corey. I'm sure most here know that the W/S is a structural element, so important to stick to OEM for strength and the UV protection layer. I don't think the aftermarket is making them for us yet, but buyer beware. Oh, I lowered my comp deductible to $0 last week!

 

LOL a bug storm sound slike a hail storm. Come to think of it I would hate to be driving an FJ through a hail storm!

Yeah Corey avoid ANY states where they don't enforce the mud-flap law...

I had a windshield replaced by a S....y Glass store in WA.
Cost $ 545 part and taxes, $ 150 for labor.

Don't have a clue where people, left and right, are paying $1200 and even more..
where are you guys getting that price?

That was an old price Jean when the FJs first came out.
Prices have come way down on the glass.

Mine was done in Auburn, WA. to the tune of $1.6K which also included the top plastic windshield trim.

I only paid like $50 though, as my insurance company picked up the rest due to my plan and deductible.

 

Revival of an old thread

No one can say now the search engine does not work
I typed in chip and my name, and this was the second hit from the top of the list, the thread I was looking for.

Anyways, coming home from work I heard a whack on the windshield, and a star crack about the size of a nickle was right above the wiper and in my line of sight.
Man that bugs me when something is on the windshield and you can see it out of the corner of your eye.

Anyways, it is a free fix through Geico, and they are sending a repair guy to my home tomorrow, way cool.
I want to nip this in the bud, as the last chip I got ended up spreading all the way across right before my eyes when I had to have the windshield replace a few years back.


I have been very lucky to not have had more.
I have very small pits from rocks, but no major cracks like this.
With the near vertical window of the FJ Cruiser, you are going to get the little pits.
Today though the rock that hit must have hit it just right, as I have had many rocks hit with no problem over the past few years.
