T100 brakes

Got a neighbor/friend that has a 96 T100 excab with the 3.4.

he says its time for a full brake job including rotors. He wasnt keen on spending big $$ on yota parts and instead getting cheepy rotors. I mentioned to him that it is a big truck and rotors arnt something id skimp on.

so i read a lot about the larger better setup for the 2000 & newer tundra's and migrateing the same brake setup to 3rd gen 4runners.

but in the mulitpul threads about it i always get lost about what works and what doesnt. (it would seem this topic is screaming for a sticky)

after reading this post a couple of times https://www.yotatech.com/forums/show...=tundra+brakes

and this tread which provides a lot more info as it occurs latter in time and therefore more answers
https://www.yotatech.com/forums/show...t=Tundra+brake

this is the conclusion ive come to.

the upgraded rotors (and corisponding calapers) do NOT work on 15" rims. no one has tried this on 2nd gen stuff but its been asked before.

so whats the word on T100 brakes?

I was under the impression the T100 shared the suspension of the older 2nd gen 4runners/trucks but the newer years had the motors/trans of the newer 3rd gen taco/4runner.

so for T100's
does that leave the brakes as a 2nd gen thing (parts style etc)
larger than 2nd gen stuff as they were a larger truck?
or 3rd gen stuff were you could bolt on the larger tundra brakes if you had 16" wheels.

anybody bushwacked this trail yet? or am i yet again first on the scene?

I thought about this on my T and I came to the conclusion that the T has a caliper similar to the early Tundra. Upon inspection the calipers appear to be the 199mm size used in the mods however I don't think that the newer 230mm(I think thats the size?) won't. Right now the best mod is a rear disk conversion from the drums. There is a large thread about it in the 4x4wire T100 forum. Basicly you replace the drums with backing plates for calipers and use early 80s gm calipers and disks. From what I've heard its a nice upgrade though personally I've never felt the T is under braked and I feel it can stop alot better in it then other vehicles I have driven('99 Astro for one). Anways my .02

I had tried to "upgrade" to Hawk Super Duty pads with Brembo Rotors. The braking ended up being worse. Mid way thru the Hawk's life on the pads I replaced them with Genuine Toyota and the braking improved. It still sucks, but the OEM Pads seemed better than a high performance pad.

anyone know?

I know this is an OLD thread, but does anyone have a definite answer on the subject? I'm not that tough on brakes, but with towing my boat the Napa rotors I put on a year ago are starting to warp. I run Tundra steelies in the winter, and I'm sure I can find another set for summer, so wheels aren't going to be a problem. I'd really like to be able to upgrade to 230mm calipers and big rotors like I did on my runner.
