Are T-100's with the 3.4 V6 as reliable as the classic 22RE
Newbie to this forum. Have owned a 92 22RE 4x4 since 1996. Now have 250K miles on it and Im wondering if the T-100's with the 3.4 V6 are as reliable or close to as reliable to the classic 22RE. Looking for a bigger truck with an extended cab. My 22RE is stock. Ive done all the work on it myself except the clutch. Ive done the timing chain, swapped rear end, leaf springs, exhaust manifold, y pipe..etc...I mainly use my truck for hauling around my snowmobile and building materials. It was my daily driver for 10 years but now I rarely rack up more than 5000 miles a year. I put on a steel 7 foot flatbed on it and added helper springs to help with the ridiculous weight of the steel flatbed and hauling a snowmobile in the winter. Absolutely love the truck...but its tired...runs great, always starts right away and purrs like a kitten. Gas mileage has suffered with the old tired engine...barely get less than 20 mpgs. I know mpgs aren't the focus here. Had a 2000 tundra v8 and a 1999 Tacoma for a short while and they all seem to get the same mileage...around 17-19 mpgs. Just want to know peoples opinion on the late 90's T-100's and their reliability. Looking for a 3.4 V6 with a 5 speed. Here in Washington Toyotas go for ridiculous prices. Looking for an extended cab for more room and something that will handle extra weight a little better...ie snowmobile, camper etc...If I get another rig whether its a 22RE, a Tacoma or a T-100 I know I'm gonna pay a pretty penny and probably have to do some significant work. Just wondering if its worth it.

My T100 had 269k on it, of those miles the engine was replaced on a recall in the late 90's and the guy worked for toyota. I got an entire longblock It now has approx 140k on it.
I have owned the truck for 100k and trust me I do not drive easily and I put her away wet alot. Always maintained but I let things go, like the timing belt I did oh a good 40k more than the interval. It was still good!
As for how reliable it has been:
Ive replaced almost all the rubber bushings on it, they dont like rust belt winters but thats to be expected. I also replaced the radiator only b/c I cracked the plastic tanks (was cold out) when I did the timing belt and removed it to get the harmonic balancer off, trans is still original and Ive flushed it 2x now, the heater core is iffy but its too much hassle to fix and I blew it out last winter and it was fine, ac needs a recharge as its not cold really. Only real issues I have had was the power steering box gave up and so did the reman like 20k later, the bushings in the a-arms were shot and its not an easy fix and the rear axle shafts (tundras suffer from this too apparently) bend. One of my shafts bent and while tracking down the vibration I didnt find it fast enough and it wallowed out the axle tube. Got a used axle from a yard and put it in.
Otherwise I added a large helper leaf and a set of bilstein shocks. It has towed cars over the mountains of PA (over drive off!), regular hauls my trailer and quads (but it does know they are there and its not that much weight..maybe 1500lbs?) Ive put all sorts of very heavy things in the bed, once made a scrap run with the bed full and a 5x8 trailer loaded (it didnt like that!), had a pallet of WET sod in the bed and it was not happy but did it. I cant kill the truck.
Right now Im looking for a clean older tundra. just want the power of the v8 and its time to retire the t100 as its getting old and tired.

it is all relative to how the truck has been treated as far as regular maintenance etc.
I have seen low mileage decent looking trucks blowing smoke because someone has abused it and not performed basic oil changes and on the opposite end of the spectrum are 400K work trucks that look beat but the engine purrs like a kitten because the owner followed the recommended schedule of stuff in the owner manual.

Just change your timing belt every 60k and you should be good for 250k on a engine before it gets real tired and loses compression. changing your oil at 3-5k and you should be solid.

I have 238,000 miles on mine and have replaced several small items but it has been extremely dependable. The timing belt is good for 90,000 miles and these are not interference engines so if it breaks, you just pull over and call someone. It won't bend valves, etc. I'd buy another one if I could find a low mileage cream puff.

Mine just made it to 193k this morning. 25k of that is hard, supercharged miles. I've beat on it plenty, and looking back, everything I've broken or bent or cracked has been my fault.
I've worked on many, many 3.4's. In my career, I've only personally seen 2 blow up, both from abuse. One had a trans cooler line crack off of the radiator, and the owner drove it until it wouldn't move, then continued to try to make it move, until it finally seized. The other hydrolocked somewhere in the range of 4500-5000. Other than those, I've seen a few blow head gaskets, plenty lose valve cover gaskets, and one blew the spark plug out of the head.
IMHOP, I think the 3.4 is just as reliable as a 22re. I've only owned one 22re, and the sob blew up 5k after I bought it because of an idiot friend borrowing the truck.
