Talking My first toyota pickup 97 T100 SR5

Just bought my first pickup, a 97 T100 SR5. Took me forever to find the right one. I say that because i live in New England and most of the older toyota pickups are rotted to ˟˟˟˟.
Finally came across the one i have now and i bought it on the spot! I love this truck, couldn't be happier

I got a good deal on it, paid $4k and it came with matching cap and new rubbers all the way around including spare, the truck is originally from down south so no rot. It has 225k but runs good no leaks, tranny is smooth and the interior is in great shape.
You should of seen what some of these guys wanted for the rust buckets lol! I did find one in upstate NY which was dipped in gold and rightfully so, it was a black 98 extra cab 4X4 with 85k garage kept all its life MINT guy wanted $8k. I couldn't see myself dishing out 8k for a T100, a couple more grand and I could of gotten a real nice Taco!
No regrets though, i love my T100 and i will post pics up soon. I would of already posted some but my phone won't allow me to.

Congrats on the find!

You might want to start rust proofing yer T-100 fer yer conditions up there. Especially on top of the fuel tank, under body and frame. Best to take the bed off to do all that...you don't want to take short cuts...

Thats definitely one of the top 3 on my list. I have a bit of surface rust starting to form so it will definitely get done before winter approaches.
I do have an annoying squeeking sound everytime i hit some sort of bump and i am guessing the front sway bar bushings need to be replaced. My buddy who own a sick 96 Taco lifted 7" w/ 34's on it suggested energy suspension bushings but my cousin who is a mechanic for honda said that in the winter it will still squeek due to the cold weather… any suggestions???

How many miles can I expect to get on a 96 T100

Helloo T100 people !

I need an Opinion; How many miles can I get out of a '96 T100 4x4, currently 180 K on it, one owner, mostly 4 wheeling in the snow and ice, and taken good care of ?
I rebuilt the starter (contacts !) and had the regular things break...what is next? Hoses? I think 270 k is not unreasonable.
My wife is doubtful- Wants a new little 2x4 truck.. blah, yuck.

Give me info-ammo to blunt her attack on manly trucks.
I wonder if this attitude could have something to do with her scraping her knuckles while helping me change out the starter...

Thanks, Mike

Just something to look at as far as your squeak goes. I have the same exact truck and had a squeak everytime I hit a bump. Tried to find it for weeks untill I had the hood up while smacking the bumper trying to replicate the squeak and it wouldn't do it. Squirted the hood latch down with wd-40 and haven't heard it since.

First, thanks for the reply; but this is less of a squeek than a spinning, whiirrring, mostly constant grind.

And it comes from the instrument cluster. My stethoscope tells me it is right behind or in the speedometer.

I wish it were something like what you suggest...

Happy Trails !

Mike

That's the speedometer cable, it needs to be lubed. But to the OP, congrats on the T100. I would recommend coating the inside of the frame with Eastwood internal frame coating ( http://www.eastwood.com/internal-fra...ay-nozzle.html ) and coat the outside with some good frame paint like Chassis Saver (Magnet Paints). Make the frame last through those New England winters.

Sorry...a software glitch, mine or the machine's...By the way, I had a squeak like yours when I first got the 96 T100- It was coming from the leaf springs.
I am also still confused, and probably will remain that way. Happy Trails !

I have the same squeak in my T100, Same as my 4runner and my brother's Tacoma. Just the speedo cable, Just grease as stated and you should be good. If it is below 20 outside my truck does the same. Good luck with your build!

You can rack up the miles on these. I purchased mine from the orig. owner who was the service manager at a Dallas Toyota Dealership. Currently has 229K and head gasket finally let go. I had heads reworked and just put all new gaskets, head gaskets, reworked, and all seals and tb/wp parts. Used all toyota parts.

No rust on mine as it was a TX truck. I have changed all the fluids (front rear axle, diff, tranny), front axle and brakes. Now live in NC on the coast. Should last me for many years and hopefully worry free.

Assuming it was previously farily well maintained, keep the fluids changed and dont drive it like you stole it and it should run for quite some time. I plan on another 100K on mine which no more than I drive it should be about 10 years or more.
