EPA Adjusted "new"standard" - 14mpg city 16mpg highway.

Yer right on target

Note that the MANUAL is 15mpg city - 17mpg highway

a 96 2WD 4cly manal is 18/22 and a 2WD 4cly auto is 17/20

So there's the differnce

Ditcht he transfer casem the front axle (probably what - 500lbs) and get a manual... and violia

Or get a Honda Civi

Bout what I get, 16mpg city if I am lucky. I have a 96 3.4L Auto with 31's but they ride rough (tires). best I have gotten was 17-18mpg or so during october.

Beating the EPA numbers is doable but
-- not easy
-- not inexpensive
-- usually not feasible for a DD

Some of the things are "banned" by the EPA - as int he manufs cant used them to improve fuel economy on the Govt test - but you can use them
-- synth lube
-- lower rolling resistance tires (increased air pressure etc)

Others are do-able but often not feasible
-- TALLER gears
-- cut out weight

ALot of it has to do with the driver's right foot and is often not realistic on a road with other cars.

Long run - Id toss out a max of 20% improvement on the high side - so that means a 20mpg goes to 24mpg?
But a realistic number is a 10% improvement - and even that takes discipline - so thats 20mpg boosted to 22mpg.

In your case that means a 15mpg becomes 16.5mpg and a high (but probably unrealstic 18mpg) and note that even that 18mpg is still in the EPA "window" at the highway level...

i just bought a 95 t100 4x4 ext cab 3.4 with 5speed. this thing turns around 3000 rpm at 70 mph whereas my fiances 4runner with the auto turns barely 2200 rpm at 70. i expected bad mileage with such a high cruise rpm but got 20 mpg country/town driving and 21.4 highway on a trip to indiana! im rather happy! i also drive like a grandpa and set the cruise at 65 ish on the highway. id like to know why the drastic difference in the cruising rpms between the 5 sp and auto trannies.

Gonna guess that yer differential ratio is higher than her auto. You wouldn't happen to know what it is fer yer truck, do you?

The best I ever got in my 93 2WD T100 auto was 26.4mpg highway/day/light load...and that was driving around 60 mph. I average around 20-22 on the highway now traveling around 65 mph at night. The lowest I got was around 14 mph towing my car...

I wish I could get that kind of gas mileage with my T100. best I ever got was about 18.5. that was doing about 70-73 down the highway. but, I expect that with the factory gears. 4.70 stock. crank about 3000rpms at 68ish MPH.
