First T100 troubleshooting help
Hello all!
So, I'm not new to the site (88 4runner with 3.4L engine swap) but I'm new to this vehicle (95, 4x4, 3.4L). It's for my daughter and it has a couple of things I want to get figured out before i turn it over to her.
The PO didn't really take care of it, but I've got everything running well now minus these last two things.
First, the speedometer isn't working. I climbed under the truck and discovered the cable was pulled out of the gear which connects to the transfer case. I took the gear off, jammed the cable back in and it practically fell of the gear as I was screwing it back together. I carefully got it keyed correctly and connected. Drove the car back and forth in the yard a bit and saw the little square thing (I had the dash disassembled at the time) rotating as if it would be working the speedometer correctly. However, I'm sure the cable and gear wont stay together for very long. My question is: do i need a new cable (which will then hopefully stay seated in the gear) or do i need a new gear which will "clamp" down properly onto the old cable. I realize this may sound like a question you need to see the components in order to answer, but I'm basically wondering what (besides pressure) holds these two things together. My cable does seem to want to stay seated in the gear. Or maybe I need to replace both. Anyway, just looking for your best guess.
Second, the dash panel temp gauge never indicates any temperature (hence the reason i had the dash apart). It appears everything was connected properly behind the dash, but is it likely to be the actual gauge that has failed, or is the item that is actually sending the temperature to the gauge which is more likely the culprit. Is there a way to test these items so i don't have to throw money at parts which may not be broken in the first place? Where on the 3.4L will i find the sending unit?
Thanks for any info/advice.

Congrats on the new to you T!
As for problem number 1, is this the portion you are talking about?

This is the actual drive gear. The cable screws onto the back of this.
The gear itself is replaceable. I changed mine to correct my speedo from my regear.
As far as the temperature sender goes, have you checked to see if you have a voltage signal coming from the sensors? There are two coolant temp sensors on a 3.4. I don't have access to a wiring diagram on my iPad, but I believe it should be somewhere between 1-5 volts, depending on the temperature.
