297,000 mile 5vz-fe t100
Just got bought a 96 t100 yesterday, ex cab 4x4 auto with the 5vz-fe. Odometer still works and reads 297,000 miles, it starts right up drives pretty wells, shifts on time and smooth. I get a coolant smell after 15-20 minute drive though, couple small oil leaks i havent pinpointed yet. What should I start out with as far as maintenance goes?
-timing belt and water pump
-spark plugs and wires
-air and fuel filter
-oil change
-inspect brakes and brake fluid
-shocks all around rears leak a lot
-radiator hoses
-thermostat
-maybe radiator too
-clean maf and throttle body
-check t case front/rear diff fluid
first toyota I've owned but my friends first car was a 84 celica gt, and my dad had a built 76 land cruiser with a small block chevy. I've done some mild builds but never any 4x4.
looking to make this a good daily and weekend trail/camping rig

Did an oil change today, drain probably 6 quarts maybe a little more.
Checked the trans fluid and its brown and pretty thick and low. Both of the trans cooler fittings at the radiator are leaking, the passenger one is cracked.
One of the power steering lines is leaking coming off of the reservoir.
Looks like all the vacuum lines are dry and cracked, I'm guessing the coolants are soon to go to.
Radiator looks pretty new and the alternator looks brand new.

Welcome to YotaTech!
There are not too many T100 owners here , but more and more seem to be joining the forums each week.
It sounds like you have a clean T100 with the typical mile and age-related maintenance problems. The 5VZ-FE is a great engine.
The engine bay looks clean!
If you are daily driving this truck, I would inspect the brakes next. It is more important to be able to stop than it is to go!
If the brake pads, rotors, drums, and shoes look fine for the time being, then just replace the old, dark brake fluid.
This T100 just needs some maintenance love.
Feel free to post more pictures when you get a chance.

so with a little more looking today I found info about the pink milkshake that can happen on 3.4 v6 automatics. And it the trans fluid look really nasty. What size aftermarket coolers do people run, and what do I have to look out for as far as daily Temps and driving in the snow

I may have to take you up on this offer as well if that's ok. Gonna schedual an appt with local dealer to have it inspected. Boutgh mine 2 or 3 months ago and it's a little worse than I thought. Did the shocks and power steering send/return line. I see valve cover gaskets, trans cooler lines, tune up kit, and perhaps timing kit. I also bought new A arm ball joint set for both sides due to rust. What's driving me nuts is diagnosing this ticking sound from motor and my low oil pressure (full synthetic). I only hear ticking/tapping when I am lightly pressing accelerator often when trying to do slow speeds. Manifold area??

Sounds good to me. And dude i know exactly the sound your talking about had it with my truck 1 your oil pressure gauge is just faulty most likely the gauges are not the most reliable. 2 i heard that sound in my truck as well for the longest time. Ended up being a loose exaust bolt. The exaust was tapping agianst the inside of the heat insulation

So my head gasket went out and was sending exhaust through my coolant reservoir. I pulled a used engine out of an 01 4Runner and I’m in the middle of swapping the oil pan, intake, alternator, and a couple other bits. Can I use the 4Runner dipstick with my oil pan?

Looks clean for such high mileage. Makes my used car buying spidey senses tingle.
I bought my T with 240k on the clock and ive done a lot of work on it but dont regret it all! Except when im workin on it in the summer sun. Even tho its a yota theres still maintenance on hi mile trucks.
If the frame is rust free thats important.
Its a solid foundation for a truck. Its a quirky not quite full size truck. You will probably want something smaller or more powerful at times but this is a golden age toyota that will have its own episode on some car show twenty years from now.
best of luck!

New motor ready to go.
Almost
She’s in
And today she finally started and ran good the wire broke off for the temp gauge so I have to fix that and I have to get some tranny fluid before I can move anywhere.
and the exhaust is fubar.... I had another thread were I swapped the newer 2001 style manifold because my passenger side was cracked in half, but the pipe I welded is to long and too angled to fit the muffler and to tightened all the nuts all the way down. I don’t have a welder at home so I’m gonna have to find time to do it at work, and chop the weld I did and refit it with everything bolted together this time
