wiring harness compatibility 88 4runner
Hey guys, So I have a 1988 toyota 4runner that needs a new wiring harness. I'm wondering what year harness' will be a direct replacement? will 86-88 harness' be the only option? or could I use any of the 89+ harness'? I mainly just need the interior harness. any info would be awesome. thanks!

What engine do you have? 22-re or 3Vz-fe. If you have a 22-re it depends when your 88 was manufactured! Prior to August of 88 the 22-re had low impedence injectors with a resistor pack located on the passengers side inner fender, but the wiring for this is in the cab harness that comes out through the inside of the fender. If yours has this then the 86-88 harness should work but Toyota likes to move wires around from different models and different years, so you will have to trace out the connector pins to make sure they are the same. After August of 88 Toyota went to high impedence injectors and removed the resistor pack, if your 88 is this type 89-94 will probably work, but again you will have to verify pin configuration. I think the 3vz's were pretty much the same, but you have to check connector pin configuration!

The harness seperates into 3 or 4 sections. Which part is bad? There are several differences. 85/86 diagnostic port on driver side, 87 and up diagnostic port is on passenger side, 88 is the odd ball year for injectors. 90 and up is a different body style so not sure if all the connectors are the same.
