Wire Harness Years?

Wire Harness Years?
I recently bought an 84(+?) 4x4 A/T pickup. So far as I can tell it's built out of two maybe three other thrucks. It's fuel injected so I assume it's a 22RE (year unkown). The frame number and ECU code to an 86. The tranie appears to be a 304H.
The guy who built the truck was one hell of a welder but he was definately no electrician. The wiring is a total mess. It will be easier to sart over than try and fix what's there. I'm leaning toward picking up an 86 harness but I was wondering how much interchangeability there is between gen-5 model years?

Well are you talking all the different harnesses for the whole truck??
Then your talking a used harness as well .
The same year engine harness is different between auto and manual.
As long as all the sensors match the ecu that should work.
If your just doing a engine harness you very likely will end up having to repin things to merge with the cab harness.
Without sitting down and looking
Just like doing any other swap you need the EWD for all the years your working on.

Mostly looking at cab & under hood wiring. The truck has an aftermarket flatbed so none of the back end is OEM anyway.
I used to build MFI harnesess for Samurai engine swaps. I know what I can interchange with them but I'm new to Toys. It sounds like my best bet is to pick a year and just go with that.

I think you meant to say 340H. I think that is a V6 tranny. Usually the 4 cylinders are W-5? or a G-5? something but that I could be wrong on that.
I would get a complete harness all the way to the tail lights. The tail light harness has the fuel pump connection on it, so you are going to need a fuel tank that is off of a fuel injected truck and the fuel lines as well.
The 85 and 86 models have the diagnostic port on the drivers side and is a round connector. The 88 is a stand alone year, mostly something to do with the injector resistance. The 87 and up have the diagnostic on the passenger side fender.
To do a harness swap, I would suggest removing the dash and fenders and having a donor truck available. It is not hard to do a swap if you have all the correct pieces. There are some that you can interchange from 85-88 pickups and 85-89 runners. But there are some differences.85 and 86 tend to use more round style connectors and the 87 and up tend to be flat style.
I maybe doing a harness swap on my 85 truck build a little later on the following week or so and will post pictures on it when I do. On my 88 runner build below, I have it listed on the first page where to find out about getting the dash out. I have a few videos on removing it in the 88s build thread. Any questions that you may have, just ask on the 85 build and I can answer it there.
Here is the different types of diagnostic connectors I am talking about. You can go with either year, but best to stay with one year.

How to get Check Engine Codes. I just put this up for others. Applies to 87 and up. 86 and older is the bottom picture.

The Diagnostic port for the 85-86 is on the Drivers side inner fender and is nothing the same as the 87 and up. Here is T1 and E1 jumped. The codes and engine flashes are the same as the rest of the trucks on the dash.

Yes typo on the trannie #. Is there an easy way to diferentiate between a 340F and a 340H (without taking anything part)? The reference material I've found thus far indicates what I have is one or the other.
THX for the pics! I couldn't find the diagnostic connector(s) where I thought they should be. Knowing what to look for really helps! :-) I'd already figured out how to complete the test circuit bypassing the connector but I'd rather do it the right way.
I understand many mechanical parts will not interchange between 1st and 2nd gen 22RE's. Is there much differnce in the wiring layout (other than the ever eloving connectors)?
To give you an idea of my skill level I put a 96 Tracker motor in my 88 Samurai. To avoid the plethera of OBD2 sensors I wired it as a 95 (OBD1).
