sr5 guage cluster swap problems.
hello,
my truck is a 85 4runner originally equipped with an auto but i swapped in a w56. When i plug in the sr5 cluster the fuel gauge goes all the way past full and the engine temp is pegged out hot as well. i figured my cluster was bad so i bought another and it does the exact same thing. i'm thinking of swapping out the fuel sending unit and temp sensor with 5 speed equipped parts. on the original cluster all the gauges work perfectly. from what I've read this should be a straight forward swap. i'm stumped. anyone ran into this before?

The fuel sending unit and temp sensor should be the same for both automatic and manual 4Runners.
If I remember correctly, Toyota changed the pin-outs of the connectors for the gauge cluster between automatic and manual transmissions. This means that the correct information from your existing senders is going to the wrong terminals on your "new" SR5 gauge cluster. This assumes that the SR5 cluster you are installing is for a manual transmission vehicle (manual SR5 gauge clusters have a volt meter and automatic SR5 gauge clusters have the ETC indicator where the volt meter would go).
I do not have a 1985 Factory Repair Manual so I cannot confirm what wiring you have. I will look at my 1987 Factory Repair Manual in the morning and see what wires go where.
I think RAD4Runner may have the 1985 wiring diagrams.

figured it out! old87yota you were right. the A and C terminals were pinned differently. the part that was messing me up is that the fsm shows clusters with tacs are pinned out the same as the clusters without tacs , which in my case was not true. to repin i traced the circuits out on the back of my old cluster then looked up what the correct pin was for the new cluster in the fsm using this diagram. thanks for the help guys! i hope this helps someone out some day.
