I love my 2007 FJ, but if there's something that it's lacking it's a proper overhead console with proper MAP/READING LIGHTS.

I had the perfect console for this in my 1999 Suburban, and after searching on eBay I ran across THESE - the replacement units from my old truck!



I understand the electrical/wiring involved in this project: I'll just tap into the existing dome lamp for power for the center lamp-that way I can use the existing dome switch to run this as a secondary, so it will come on when that light does. Then I'll run a second set of always-on fused DC leads for the map lights. I'll also run LED bulbs for the dome lights - that way the existing fusing will be more then capable of dealing with the voltage load.

What I'm not sure about is where I can attach the console itself into the roof infrastructure or where I can run power leads up from the fuse panel up to the roof liner (I'll use an Add-A-Circuit for the map lights, unless someone knows of a convenient always-on power source in the roof area). Ideally, I'd like to mount this between the front seats about 6" back from the windscreen - that way the driver or the front passenger can easily reach the map lights. The additional center dome light should provide some nice additional lighting as well.

Any tips/suggestions on where I can affix screws for this and where to run the wires?

If the FJ is switched ground as the other Toyotas you don't need to run a power wire from the fuse box. Just imitate what Toyota did with their map lights.

You only need to extend two wires from the roof light, positive and ground. As the truck is ground switched, the positive always have current.

Then, wire the ground of the stock roof light directly to the ground side of the bulbs in the new map light and connect another ground (Take it from the bolts of the roof) throught the swithes the new map light has.

This way when you open the doors the direct ground will connect and close the circuit = light shines and when you put the swith on you'll also close the circuit.
