Help with ignition questions
Hey, I've been chasing down the reason I have no spark, and after replacing the "cheap" things (coil, distributer), I'm on to the ignitor. I bought the correct ignitor for my truck, which is a 1983, and only ignitors from sometime in '82 until the end of the '83s will work with my truck. So when the 83 ignitor didn't fit, I looked closer and found that someone had spliced a later-model plug onto my truck in order to make a later model ignitor (probably junk yard special) work on my truck. So, my truck has been rigged to fit an '85-88 carbed engine ignitor.
It seems that the junk yard is the only source to find the correct plug for my truck so that I can use the correct ignitor, and I know there are no '83s around here, and getting one on the internet means I have no vehicle for probably another 2 weeks in my experience. So I'm going with the later model ignitor. A guy at the parts store (didn't work there, just a guy buying stuff) mentioned that "sure, you can make that one fit, but it's different internally and it will screw things up". So? Am I setting myself up for another ignitor failure or maybe even messing other ignition parts up by using an ignitor not built specifically for my truck? At this point this is the trucks 3rd ignitor, which seems like a lot even for a 25 year old truck.
What do you think? Anybody have real knowledge on this kind of thing? Am I fine, or should I really try to get the truck back to '83 specs?
