Can the daytime running light mod be on a switch?

Just wondering if the mod to disable the 01/02 4Runner daytime running lights could be put on a switch? (write up in electrical tech section ) Would like to do this mod so I don't blind the base security guards every morning but kind of like having the daytime running lights on for normal daytime driving.

Any info out there on this?

yes you can, I beleieve there was info about it in the write-up on this site, if not, I did mine like that, and I'll post about later, after work. You have to turn off and restart the truck before the lights will work after flipped off though. Check the writeup again, I think it was just as simple as switching the wire you cut, but I'll check on mine whenever I get a chance.

I would just disable them completely. Then leave your lights on all the time. Then when you turn the truck off and open the drivers side door, your lights should automatically turn off. You get better bulb life from disabling the drl's too, as the lower voltage of drl's does not heat the bulb to its normal operating temperature.

Wow that is good info right there. Cool. Thanks for the input guys. Makes more sense with my application to just disable them than switch it. Did not realize I would have to turnoff then restart the Runner for the switch to work.
Thanks Again
This is why I love this Forum!

Dibble9012 beat me to it... I just did this mod on my 03 DC Taco, and I thought about puttin gin a switch, but then thought right along the lines of his post. I have been very happy with the control I have over my lights now... It's nice not to blast the living room with headlights when I come home after dark... Do it, Eric... You'll be stoked.

I thought you could have the dealer reprogram the truck to NOT use day time running lights. (if you want them turn your headlights on when your driveing, which was apprently to hard to do in the first place )

I switched mine, I kind of liked the in between setting, I know its not good for the bulb, but I been runnin on stockers since '01 knock on wood. The DRLs are perfect for driving on well lit highways at night, not as bright as the headlights, but still bright enough, maybe I'm just crazy.....

Yeah that is what I'm gonna do. You make a good point.

It is interesting that your 03 Dcab Taco has DRL's. My wifes 04 Dcab Taco doesn't have them.
THanks

Considering that's illegal since you aren't running at full voltage AND without tail/running lights, that's a habit you probably want to break pretty quickly before you have a meeting with some guys in uniforms & driving Crown Vics.

Just wanted to add that I did this mod to the Runner last weekend and it is super easy and a very welcome change to be in control of my head lights again!
Thanks for your opinions and help!

Yeah, yeah, didnt think about that, guess I won't really be using them that often anymore, I never have been behind the truck while it was running, and completely forgot, suprising I havent gotten pulled over yet, that one wasn't too bright
