I just bought a 1983 toyota from a tow yard for a few hundred dollars the only thing wrong with it is the crarging system it keep blowing the alternator when I install it. I have replaced the voltage regulator and checked all the wireng. I was wondering if tthere is a ground wire that is suppose to connect to the alternater and also I have a black/red wire that is going into the possitive side of the battery I thought mabe that was in the wrong place. please help

 

The '83 FSM wiring diagram shows a white wire going from the alternator to the battery, through a fusible link. Here is a photo from the FSM that shows all the wires to the alternator and the regulator. There isn't a black with red wire shown so I can't help you there. Good luck,

thanks I figured out the red/black wire. Now I need to know if there is a grond that goes on the back of the alternator looks like it in the diagram

 

i tossed that old external regulated POS alternator and replaced it with a internal regulated alternator out of a 22re. You have to steal the mounting brackets off the block and it only takes two wires to get it going charge and excite. It even has more amperage.

On these vehicles it is a good idea to up grade the grounds and the cable to the battery along with the wire from the B terminal of the battery.

The grounds were to small from new and the others are all for the most 20 plus years old.

 

The alternator grounds through the mounting bolts. The ground symbol in the diagram stops short of the lines at the bottom of the page. The lines at the bottom represent ground wires and will show the location of the grounding point. Any piece of equipment that grounds through it's mounting will show the grounding symbol but won't join any of the grounding wires. The starter is the same way.
