Alternator Help

Alright A while back while driving home the back nut on the bottom bolt of my alternator rattled itself off, when this happend the + conneection on the alternator broke off.

So i figured I'd just re-connect the connection right? Wrong. When i re-connected it i thought that would be it, but it still woudlnt hold charge. So i thought the alternator might be the problem, so i replaced it - Still wouldnt hold a charge with the new one.

This is where i started to get rattled, so maybe the wire broke itself somewhere? It still had continuity though but the wire itself is only 12-guage. I talked to a friend of mine and he said that maybe i wasn't getting enough juice through the skinny wire. Made sense, so i ran a double stranded 4-guage wire straight from my alternator to my battery.

This worked amazing for about 4 days, but not its not holding charge again! Now before this all happened it worked perfect, held my battery at 16 volts while running tons of accesories.

The new alternator i put on was only 40 amps, maybe the old one was more? Sorry to type so much but im stuck on this one.
Any help would be appreciated I'm stuck on this one
Thanks,

-Newton

something wrong with the regulator if it was charging at 16 volts.
