Truck is a '93 4x4 22RE 5 speed.

Bought it over a year ago. Ran fairly well all year. not a problem with it. over the past two months starter stared getting worse. Started up real smooth sometimes, other times really spluttered and struggled and engine started up real rough.

One day, truck wouldnt turn over. Just a rapid clicking. So I replaced the starter. got a rebuilt one from Auto Zone, installed it. Rapid clicking noise. Troubleshot it, still got rapid clicking noise. Bench tested it and realized it was inoperative.

Brought it back, got a new one. Installed it. Now it started with a stronger clicking noise. Then it started to catch, begun to turn the flywheel and the engine began to splutter...but didnt catch. Finally after a few tries I gave up. I pop-started it and drove it down the road, pulled a U-ey and came back. Shut it down. Waited, and it started up with the new starter real rough. I shut it down and did it two more times as the manual recommends. Each time it was rough and just barely started the engine. The longer I waited between starts, the harder it got to get the engine going. After a few mins it went back to clicking again.

I know that my battery is putting out only about 10v but it was starting the truck up perfectly with that battery and the old starter just fine.

Any ideas what the problem could be? I'm off to basic in 8 days and i'd like to get my truck into a fair condition so I'm not constantly pissed off that its sitting at home not running for a few months you know?

thanks guys.

10v will do that. try also checking for any corrosion or broken wires between battery and starter including any and all grounds. Missing engine grounds would be a good place to start as well.

Now if your battery is only 10v and you drove around on it, what's your alternator output? With the vehicle running, you should see around 14.5v across your battery terminals. Not there? well, alternator not charging battery, leading to poor battery voltages, leading to starter not properly engaging. If it's there, try charging the battery and seeing if it will hold a (proper) charge. It might but from the running rough and then back to not fully engaging the starter, I strongly suggust you check that alternator output.

thanks for your help guys, but it turns out the battery was just FUBAR, combined with an aging starter. New starter and battery, truck is running like a champ.
