'86 4Runner high beams not working

When you push forward to go to high beam it goes dark, but you can pull back like to flash your high beams and they work? Relay or is it in the combo switch on the steering column?

I would say that your hi-beam contacts are shot in the combo switch. You can take the switch apart and clean them up, but it won't get you very far. An aftermarket replacement is probably your best bet. You can get one from a junk yard, but you really don't know what you are getting nor how long it will last.

I've heard you can remove your combo switch and clean the contacts, and everything will work fine.

I need to clean mine too.

It depends on whether the contacts are just carboned up or pitted and burned up. If pitted they need to be filed smooth and there isn't a lot of contact surface area to start with.
