Yota Newb

Hey everyone!
I am a newb to the Yota scene. Long time fan but recently searching for one. I cannot decide between a 1st and 2nd gen 4runner.
I like the removable top of the 1st gen. I would love to do the chop to a 2nd gen.
Either way I want to have a 22r.

Any advice to help make the decision?
Thanks!

If you want a 22-R, then forget about getting a 2nd gen 4Runner. They only came with 22-REs.

I'd suggest an '84 or '85 with the solid axle if you can find one.

The 22re is a better motor; so you are OK there. I have an 87 4runner and I never take the top off for security reasons. On the second gen access to the back with the top on is much better because there are 4 doors. I think the difference is how much of the time you will have the top off. I can see no reason to chop a 2nd gen when you can just start with a first gen.

^This. It would help if we knew what you intend on using it for.
Daily driver with some mods?
Rock crawler?
Mud truck?
Weekend trail rig that can be driven on the street?
Camping/tow rig?

In my opinion, if you plan on chopping a 2nd gen, you might as well get a 1st gen and save time and work.
