Won't Start When Warm, Help Please!!
OK, so this last saturday i did lockwood/miller jeep trail in my '89 3.0 V6 4runner and first the trail fix i had was a hole in my radiator. so i just JB welded it. good to go. it ran great until about 3/4 through the trail i stalled it and it wouldn't start. :/ we did some trouble shooting and thought it was the MAF (mass air flow) sensor, because when we would unplug it the truck would start, but ofcourse run like crap. when we would plug the MAF back in, the engine would die.
so after leaving my truck on the trail, i came back the next day and installed a new MAF and it started right up. so i finished the trail, during which time i shut it off and started again a few times plus when i aired up at the top.
after about an hour's drive home i shut it off for about 3-5 minutes. i then went to move it but it wouldn't start, it was acting the same way it did on the trail. i let it sit for about an hour and a half, then it started right up.
this morning before i started it, i put the old MAF back on. once on, i cranked it, and it started right up. i haven' been able to do anymore testing since, but have no idea right now what it could be. the fluids are good, and the temp is normal, any ideas? thanks!

Bad Ignitor.
No question in my mind. I literally went through the exact same thing. It would just randomly do it, and then finally stopped when I swapped it out. Only when warm. If it cooled down it would start right up. When I swapped mine out, its never done it since. I literally had two separate motors in the shop that I was raping sensors from. Everything from a coolant temp sensor to the cold start injector, etc. I swapped the distributor, coil, everything except the ignitor. When I finally swapped it out, I never had an issue again.
The issue is that a new ignitor is NOT cheap. Try over $300. So, try to find a used one. You will need one from a 1988-1989 only. The later models are not the same.
Try California Mini Truck in Pomona. They are a Toyota wrecking yard and may have one at a decent price.
Good luck.
