Windshield Problems...Advice?

okay guys...I was once again doing the states job for them and picking up road debris, this time in the form of a large rock on I-20...unfortunately, I caught it at 80, with my windshield...

So my question is....
Do I try to tough it out until it just breaks so much I cant see out of it? I am a little worried about this time of year what with the drastic temp changes from freezing when it is parked, to hot when the defrost and heat are running...
Do I replace ASAP?
When I replace (now or later) do I go with OEM, or Aftermarket?

Any ideas on pricing for either one? Its an 04.

thats gonna spread and its gonna do it fast, how big was that rock man?

imho i would get a new one now, and im sure you will pay less for aftermarkt and get the same quality. oh just watch out tho, each company has a diferent type of tint in thier class, some have a greener color, some bluier, some just clear. when i replace the windshield in my 91 civic, i found some glass at a junker, fit perfect but color was all off.

from what I remember, the only decent after market quality windshield is made by PPG? or PGG? If you can't get that, go OEM.

Replace ASAP. File on your insurance if you don't have the cash.

Did you scream like a little girl and poop your pants when it happened?

My deductible is $1000 and if glass needs to be repaired, I dont pay anything, but if it needs to be replaced I have to pay deductible. Surely a new windshield and install cannot be $1000. So its cheaper in the long run to not tell insurace at all. Cause it'll just make my rates go up even though they arent going to pay anything.

I've got a bussy who works in a restoration shop, I think I am going to get him to put the glass back in for me. Just buy it, and let him install, none of the shops around here garuntee it not to leak anyway... :slap:

and yes I screamed like a little girl ....

... and had to have my seat cleaned.

Call around and get quotes...in Tuscaloosa windshield install for my 85 varied $150 from $350 to $200, so do your homework. A lot of places now will come install it where your truck is...while you are at work or something and it doesn't cost any more - lifetime guarantee.

Shop around.

Nice crack! I have never got an OEM windshield before. I have no idea how much of a price difference OEM will be to others. I also don't know if there is much of a difference between different windshields.

Absolutely correct. Only reason to go PPG v OEM is cost. PPG is typically similar priced to other glass - but is much nicer (based on my survey of people 6 months ago for my glass replacement).

I would def. replace now with PPG or some another good aftermarket .... cheap glass is prone to easy cracking.... I know from experience! there are alot of gravel pits in my area!

This is what I have found so far.

Bryans Glass - $274.41 - Lifetime Garuntee against leaks, and free mobile installation included. OEM Glass.

Binswanger Glass - $249.55 - Lifetime Garuntee against leaks, two free rock chip repairs, and free mobile installation included. OEM Glass.

Clear Choice Auto Glass - $165.99 - No clear Garuntee, free mobile installation included, don't speak good english, and didn't know a tacoma was a pickup.

I'm thinking Binswanger. Michelle was very helpful, and professional. This price sound about right to you guys??

sounds fair...... just make sure its OEM they tell you that, but its OEM replacement or some BS.... not a Toyota winsheild, on the other hand if rock chips and pecks are not a frequent thing either one

I'm in the same boat, sort of. Mine got hit by a 4inch "blue" rock from a waste truck on the road and the trucking company payed me 275.00 for a new windshield, that was two years ago. It's a 3" star with lots of glass missing but on the passenger side so I left it alone and have since picked up another ding that could be fixed-(that's why I waited...LOL). ppg is the way to go for after market glass but here are my questions.

1) I have to get it replaced by next Feb for inspection, does cold weather effect the installation with the rubber seals? If so I'll get it done now while it's not real cold.

2) What do I ask for in reguards to tint? I'll be getting a PPG piece and I guess the OEM is tinted to some degree, should I just tell them to match the part number on my original windshield..

Thanks

Doug

Doug, what tint are you talking about the little strip at the top of the winshield or are you referring to side glass?

I've used my local Binswanger before for small jobs (side mirrors, house windows, bathroom mirrors) they're great people and do top-notch work.

I would just go OEM, can never go wrong with that! That sounds like a decent price, I think they quoted me $250 as well about a month or two ago when I was looking around to replace my dad's windshield.

Hopefully that will work well for ya.

Fink

some OEM glass is not really clear. Most is, I think toyotas all are just "clear", I think what he is talking to is with some cars, especially higher end, like mercedes and stuff, there is an inherent tint in the windshield glass, it may be just a tad bit blue, a tad bit yellow, or even just a shade darker than clear. Most people will never even notice it, until you put them behind pure clear glass. Then they will notice the lack of the tint they had before.
