What is the problem with shocks that are too long?

As the title reads.
I have a modified 1st gen with unknown size shocks up front that have a good amount of corrosion. I want to replace them but I don't know what length they are.

What kind of consequences would you see from shocks that are too long?

Among other things, I would imagine that if the shock bottomed out hard enough, you could bend the shaft, if it was too long for the application.

if they're too long won't it destroy the shocks under compression?

Yes, it will. It can blow the shock. Just remove the shock and measure it, or at least, flex the truck out and measure that way.

I have the same problem. They just bottom out & limit articulation until I can redo the susp.
