what actually got replaced???

I sheared some teeth off on my pinion gear in my rear diff about 2 years ago and took the third member out of my truck and had them completly overhaul the whole thing using the same third member housing. I got to thinking if they actually replaced absolutly everything. as far as spider gears, adjusting nut, all the little washers etc. the charged me 1028 dollars for a complete master insstall kit with 4:88 ring and pinion. ( I also wish I knew what brand they put in there) and a detroit ru-trac. I still installed third member in to my truck. I just felt i payed a little much for that. what would you guys think as far as all what got replaced. I could have orderd a completly loaded 3rd member out of magazine for 75 dollars more and know all that was new??

well, the tru trac replaced all of the spider gears etc, in the carrier itself.

300 or so for the true trac, 200 for gears, 100 for instal kit, plus about 4-6 hours for labor at standard 80 bucks an hour= 920-1080. Sounds about right.

Are you experiencing problems with your diff?

For others reading this thread.

If you are replacing ALOT of parts (aka both the R&P AND the Diff) its often cheaper to get an entire 3rd member from a company that builds em (aka Randy's R&P etc)

I had a local shop redo the R&P
-- I brought them the 3rd chunk out of the axle
-- I sourced the gears
-- I sourced the master kit
-- reuse the TruTrac

I think it was $250/300 for labor....

The shop guys really did tell me that I should consider getting a chunk at Randys R&P.

I think at the time the chunk was around $900 and I got away with $600 ish s came out slightly ahead. I had a spare 4.10 open chunk so I just used that for a while (non DD - truck went into storage)

No im not experiencing any problems. After i had the work done i heard some not such good things about the shop i took it to, but everything is fine 2years down the road so a guess no worries. I wish i knew what brands of ring and pinion in there. yukon or a cheaper brand. as far as ewongs coments i did order a complete third member out of a magazine the day before i went on a 9 day vacation. and returned home still no package at my front door and no charge to my checking account. So i went with local shop and had my truck back together in 3 days.

Well, atleast your rear end is still intact!!! I had my front and rears done locally after I sourced everything. One year later I blew the rear end out while pulling away from my house one night. Man I was pissed. This is my D/D too and I never towed anything. Just back and forth to work and minor fartin' around on dirt. Fortunately, my ASE certifed fellow coworker, said if I got everything he do it for $100. He called me on the weekend while I was decontaminating my axle housing and asked if I'd loosened any of the bolts. I said no. Appartently, the idiot that did my gears must have forgot to torque all the cap bolts. My buddy screwed them off by hand. I still don't know if my front diff is any good, I guess we'll see!

Only issue Ive had with the tru trac in the rear is if the drum brakes seize up, the drag puts pressure on the one side and IMHO adds pressure to the pinion gear...

Ive sheared off a Pinion (Richmond)... IMHO due to this.
Tho Im not sure if that was the issue.
I did get oh 100K out of the R&P so I guess I really cant complain too much

The only issue I've had with the trutrac was ONCE when I was completely stopped with a rear wheel off the ground. I had a hard time getting it to bias over to the loaded tire. I learned the "gas&brake" trick and haven't had any problems. I think I read somewhere that the newer Trutracs have a higher preload for Toyota's. So, this shouldn't be as big of a problem.
