VW Bugs are air-cooled, there shouldn't be any coolant anywhere.

The water pump is on the timing cover. Can you tell where it's leaking from? Run the engine with the hood open and pull the throttle cable to rev the engine. Should spray or drip out faster and you'll know right where it's coming from.

Ah! It's a 22R-E...

Also check the water pump. Sometimes those can have a bad seal/gasket.

Nah, OP just said his engine was leaking coolant without stating what engine he had. I just assumed it was a VW Bug!

Anyway, to help out with the leak:

This is from when I did my front-end rebuild. There is a coolant pipe that goes under the exhaust; check around there. It tends to not seal if not torqued properly.
