Very Cold Weather and Brake Booster

Hey guys,

This is not a Toyota topic, but I know a lot of you drive "non-yotas" and I have come to see this site as the best automotive knowlege base in general.

So, I have an '03 Chevy Silverado, 5.3 V8, auto trans, 4x4 z71 extended cab.
The temperatures have been VERY cold in this are the past few days, and yesterday my truck's temperature readout read -21 degrees F outside. Because it was so cold, I've been really a stickler for startup procedure, starting it and running for at least ten minutes with the heater off before driving anywhere, and then keeping the speed and rpm very low until i reach operating temp.

Then, later in the day yesterday, after driving for about a half hour on and off, running errands, i get a flashing message that says "Service Brake Booster" on my dash. It has said "Service Brake System" ever since I pulled my ABS fuse, but thats a separate message. I can clear the "Service Brake System" message but I can't clear the booster message. I would think a booster failure would result in a hard pedal, But im getting the opposite. I have a very soft pedal with a lot of travel and very soft braking. I havent had time to look at it yet, but do you guys have any suggestions how this would happen?

Again, I know this isnt Toyota related so i apologize if I posted in the wrong section. I hope some of you have some suggestions for me. Thanks!

Call a chevy dealership and tell them the message and see what it means. Are you sure yours has a booster? Some have hydro boost.

Just a guess if your pedal feels the same.

What ever sensor detects a brake booster failure is either frozen or broken .

Yesterday, since I was driving more than I had this week, and possibly because of the much warmer temps here (14F) the message went away, and I seem to have some pedal feel back, although the brakes still seem sketchy. Thanks for the replies
