i've heard the the hi-pinion e-locker is weaker when it's run in the rear, instead of the front... any truth to this? i'd rather run the hi-pinion e-locker that i just got in the rear, and move my other e-locker to the front.

are there known strength issues when combining a hi-pinion with the rear axle?

Has to do with which way the gears run.
High pinion IS strong in the front.

 

The high pinion was designed as LC front third, I think the strength loss is from running on the coasting side of the gears (not the side that regularily transmits power) when run in the rear.

 

Regarding a hi-pinion in the rear...couldn't you simply swap the standard cut ring and pinion out for the reverse cut and have the gears run on the correct side of cut? I bought an e-locker hi-pinion that both the seller and I thought was a rear diff out of a tacoma...not...it is definitely cut reverse and is a hi-pinion. Wondering if I can make it work as the 3rd in the rear as it is exactly the same just upside down so to speak. I envision putting the stock V6 diff ring/pinion on the unit and install with the required mods. Lubrication may be the only issue that comes to mind but shouldn't it sling lube up just as well as if ran in the front with the reverse cut - right? I intend to put it in the rear of a '92 4runner V6. Thanks.
