Timing Chain

Hi

I have a 85 P/U with a 22re

When I start I hear minimal chain slap, but I get this sound like a pinging or the chain slapping when I drive more like when I shift or take off. Is it possible that this is the chain slapping? How much does this usually cost to repair?

Thanks

I forget if you have the metal guides or not but if you dont, its a good chance your drivers side guide has broken and the chain is banging around on the tcover. Pull your valve cover to check the condition of the chain and guides to be sure

Yup, check for gouging in the driver's side of the timing cover as toytech76 mentioned. If you let it go for too long, the chain will eat through the timing cover and into the water jacket.

Technically you are supposed to pull the head and tcover and replace all the timing components when that guide breaks. We go in and replace the one guide with only removing the valve cover. It can be done in less than an hour and is less than $300 I think. Of course if I was doing it on the side it would be alot less than that

Does the customer know you are only replacing the one guide?!

Of course they do. We explain to them the process and honestly 9 times out of 10 you really dont need to replace the whole setup. If someone wants that, sure, we will do it. This way just saves the customer a ton of money they dont need to spend
