Well, truth be told, the RAV4 is more like an All Wheel Drive vehicle than dedicated 4x4. My opinion is the demonstration shows more that it can handle a semi rough road at good speed for the type of vehicle it is. Your comment though reminds me of when I went Mt Biking in Oregon and asked about the access road to one of their 6000' elevation trails. The ranger looked at me after seeing that I drove up in a 79 Corolla, and says, "That road has not been maintained since the 20's, we only recommend high clearance 4 wheel drives on it."

Well me and my Mt Biking spirit just got all the hungrier to get up there and camp and ride that trail, so there I went. I made it all the way up and down, just had to go pretty slow and carefully place my wheels high on the rut ridges. I did bang a slight dent in the gas tank at one point, but it was well worth it.

I'm heading out to look at a 98 RAV4 tomorrow with 120,000 mi on it. I hope to heck it won't ironically turn out to be the money pit between the two.
