Rebuilt motor warranty Question

Ok I got a rebuilt motor put in my 3.0L V6 about 8 months ago it came with a 1 year warranty. and now 8 months in the head gasket has blow only 6000 miles later. My question is should I have to pay anything out of pocket to have this fixed since it was still under warranty and was not my fault I had all scheaduled maintenance done. Now the machanic is saying I will have to help pay for the labor and part to the tune of 500 dollars. Is this normal??????

does the warranty specify what it covers?

does it say it will cover all labor charges?

Not sure it just stated and I was told when I decided to get a rebuilt motor as appose to just replacing the head gasket. That it had a 1 year 12,000 mile warranty. I guess i should of ask more questions at the time. I am just wondering what other peole have had happen to them in this case. If they had to pay out of pocket and how much. I am fine paying a little out of pocket but 500 sounds a bit much for something that is under warranty.
