To Rebuild or Not? W56 Transmission

Somone gave me a used W56 transmission that they pulled from their 87 4Runner about 10 years ago. I have planned to swap this in place of my L43 in my 79 truck. It seems to shift fine and the shifter is not loose. Should I rebuild it before installing it or just put it in and hope for the best? I don't know how many miles are on it. The person that gave it to me said it was fine when he pulled it. He pulled it out when he put a Chevy small block in his 4Runner.
What would you guys do?

Thanks
brian

I would call Marlin Crawler and ask them about potential issues with the tranny and if it's worth rebuilding. My understanding is the W series transmissions aren't the strongest, but it may be a considerable improvement over the L43...they will also know if it will bolt right up or not.

thanks for the replies. I will probably just try it. I've known the guy for a few years, he wasn't trying to get rid of it. I was at his place getting some other parts and asked him about it, he said I could have it so i took it.
I'll keep you posted. I've got a big project this spring, full build up on my 79.
Gears, lockers, lift, high steer, 4.7's, onboard air. I have most the parts now but need a few more...

Check and change the fluid. If there are no particles, then I'd go ahead and run it.
