Paint Question??

I've noticed that several Toyotas esp red ones look faded almost to pink in some spots. A guy at the Toyota dealership told me that it's because the paint is single stage and not base coat, clearcoat. Is this true? The new trucks have a clearcaot. What year did they start doing this. My 93 Lightning was red with a factory single stage and it faded every time I washed it!

This one was a 1999 Tacoma and had turned really pink and cloudy around the rear glass and top of the front fenders and bed. He said it had a single stage paint. I want to know what year they went to base Coat cleacoat because I refuse to own another vehicle with a single stage paint job.

I have a 93 runner, and it has base coat, clearcoat... I know this because the clearcoat started to peel about a year ago.

yeah but yours is not a solid color.

Toyota used bc/cc systems on metallic paints and SS on solid colors.. there is nothing wrong with a urethane SS system basically every good clear on the market is a urethane. not sure what Toyota used for there SS, but it was probably enamel.

Some companies still paint solid colors single stage. Other than white I don't think any Toys come solid colors anymore. But I think the solid blues and reds were painted single stage till they were discontinued in the mid to late 90's.
