No Rear Bumper = Ticket?!

In kansas is it illegal to not run a rear bumper? I have a longbed '86 and it the bumper I was building has an horrific departure angle, so I'm always scraping it on stuff, and I wanted to not run a bumper, and weld some tow hooks to my bumper brackets so I have no bumper and two tow points? Legal or Illegal? I heard it was Illegal and I don't want a ticket...

Check your local municiple center. Here trucks dont need rear bumpers. But I would weld in a bar to go from each frame rail, to keep them from bending while being tugged on.

As far as I know it is ok for pickup trucks to run with no rear bumper, being because they are classified as a commercial vehicle. As stated though, check with your states laws, it varies from state to state.

some yotas came stock w/out a rear bumper, our 87 2wd did.. its got a couple nubs back there.. random.

I run w/out a bumper on my 87 4x4. Ive only been running one bumper bracket on the pass side for the last 3 yrs as a tow pt.

My bro n I were once pulled over in the 87 2wd and the cop said he pulled us over for not having a rear bumper but didnt ticket us. It was an excuse to run our licenses as there was a robbery in the area the same day.

Second occasion i got pulled over in my 87 4x4 and the state patrol said I needed to get a rear bumper and fix my front bumper... no ticket or citation and i still run bumperless.

just keep the bumper lying in the bed and tell the officer you were on your way home to put it back on.

? Commercial vehicle? Has nothing to do with being a pickup truck or not.

You have the option of registering a pickup as a NON-COMM vehicle, but you dont have to, since it costs extra.

"The California Department of Motor Vehicles categorizes all pickup trucks as commercial vehicles and charges a commercial vehicle fee on top of annual registration fees and has done so since 1973. Unless it is equipped with a permanent camper shell, every pickup in California is taxed as though it were being used in a business."

All pickups are considered a commercial vehicle... In California atleast...

You can usually find these things out online with a google search. But try the municipal office or cop shop.

HAHAHAHA!, Actually its funny, most weekends, like friday and saturday nights, you'll drive by the Quick-Stop on main street, right next to Sonic, and there will we atleast 5 or 6 cop cars sitting there, doin nothin'... they always show up around midnight, the first time I drove past there that late my radar detector went off and I had my windows down, and my radar detector is LOUD you can hear it inside my house if It goes off, and every cop standing outside stares and looks at me as my truck starts beeping and booping like freakin' R2-D2...

You could build a new rear bumper that has better clearance, or just buy a marlin tube bumper.

Massachusetts had the exact same law for many years. Any pickup truck was considered a commercial vehicle and it cost $100 every year to kep it registered. When I bought my 93 new I had to pay the commercial fees. Then Bill Weld took office and repealed the law, then it was your choice to register it commercially or not.
