New tires, opinions?

Okay, so its time for new tires (33x12.50)

I spend alot of time on the road but am slowley getting more and more into offroading in general.
My current street tires have just about had it so I am looking at buying new tires.

I would like to get a m/t or somthing beefy, but I need it to be able to last with all the street driving.

I had looked at some cooper discoverer stt's but I got quoted at 1000-1200 (sound fair?)

I had also looked at the BFG m/t since they are so popular, I have not gotten a quote yet.

Procomp m/t's seem okay, I have not heard much on them though.

Does anyone have any advise or recomendations for tires or a place to buy?

I am trying to keep my overall cost under a grand with tires, mount, balance etc...

thanks..

p.s remember this is in CAD and I can't be buying tires online in the us

i just bought the bfg m/ts in 235/85/16. got them for $130 each. am very pleased. i wanted to get the dayton m/ts but got the bfgs for cheaper and they have deeper tread and 3 ply sidewall. taken them out 3 times into the rocks/mud/highway/forest roads and they still have the little "nubs" on the tread surface. got them at discount and out the door $632

Toyo Open Country M/T's are good from what ive heard, www.1010tires.com sells them and they are located in Richmond(259.99 per tire, 33 x 12.50). You could also call NSOR/Sport trucks and see what they can do for ya. I wouldn't get the Procomps, heard they wear really quick and pretty much suck in all conditions(heard from a few people who had them).. Might explain why everyone is selling them.

I would recommend the Goodyear Wrangler MT/R's. They are a mud/rockcrawling tire, but works great on the street. They are supposed to last up to 50,000 miles. I've only had mine for about 5,000 miles, but the tread still looks brand new. I ordered mine from Discount Tire Direct in Arizona (?) for $162 each (32x11.50x15). Since I don't live in Arizona, there was no tax, and they ship for free. It took about a week for them to get to me, maybe longer for you since you're farther away. Total was $648. When you get them, get a good shop to install them for you, then get a good alignment service. And do regular tire rotations too, as they will prolong the life of your tires. Hope you consider them, as they are great tires. I love mine!

FYI - The new Pro Comp Xtreme MT's are made by Cooper and are esentially the same tire as the STT with a slightly different tread pattern. I've been trying to decide on tires for the last few months and just read this the other day.

Jay, drop down the border and hit up a Les Schwab Tire Center.
I am running the Dick Cepek Mountaincats which are made by Cooper, and very similar to the Cooper Discoverer STTs.

I like them so much I am getting a 2nd set this week only bigger ones.

Since you are up in canada and don't want to order online from the US kind of limits you and a budget of $1000 CDN.....Anyway when I was moving from Anchorage to New York I blew out a 33" BFG AT in the Yukon Territory (at -30 in February) it was a long time ago but I was able to get a good deal on a replacement at Canadian Tire, dunno if they are still around.
If you don't do a ton of trail travel I would recommend the AT's, I got 40K miles out of that set and still sold them for $150.

Corey right about Les Schwab-great service and lot of options, if you live in the PNW that is the place to go. I ended up going with their Dean Mud Terrain as it was a good compromise between an AT and full blown MT. COSTCO or Sam's Club or even WalMart have had decent prices based on feedback I have heard.

You might consider PM'ing 'Slacker', he lives up in BC and may have some recommendations for tire places north of the border...Good lucK

Thanks for all the replys guys!

Ordering tires from the us is not cost feasable for me, paying shipping and duty will end up costing me more.

The rents will not allow me to drive down to the us to buy tires, they don't want me to try and sneak them back into canada without paying duty, and since I just got my licence... yeah.

Costco will not install any tires bigger then factory size.Been there, tried that.

I contacted NSOR and got a quote of 1080 for 4bfg mt's out the door.
I contacted Lougheed tire (about 10 mins form my house) And he quoted me 1057 for 4 said tires out the door.

Being that it is so close to my house its just peice of mind incase I run into any problems. I have decided to get the BFG mud terrain because I have heard almost nothing about the coopers and the whole deal was from a friend of a friend of my sister's so I really dont trust him to come through. Overall the bfg m/t has gotten the best feedback from the people I have talked to.
So I am calling lougheed tire tomorrow to order the tires in for tuesday, or wednesday whenever I have a chance to get down there.

My family has been going to them since before I was born so I trust the guy.

Thanks again guys, Love this site

What size are those? I know the 255/85/16's are 33x10 or so - I'd prefer to go tall and narrow, but haven't seen pics of 235/85/16's. Got any pics?
Thanks, and sorry about the thread hijack.

i'm going to get 33x12.50R15 Goodyear MT/R's, however TIreRack is backordered for another month...or so they say. gotta find somewhere else to get them now

fwiw, my buddy has BFG MT's and Goodyear MT/R's, and prefers the MT/R's for all-around driving here in VA

While they are a GREAT rockcrawling tire, especially if you sipe 'em (best bang for the buck I believe) they are not a mud tire and general don't do all that well in the mud.
They are difficult to clear out.

MT/R doesn't stand for anything like Mud Terrain, etc., it Maximum Traction, Reinforced.

if you spend a lot of your time on-raod, I would recomend a set of BFG A/T's. if you go with the M/T's just rememebr thier street manners are not the greatest, and they do wear pretty fast, and they SUCK in snow and ice... being in Canada i dont know if thats a concern for you...
Anyway - best of luck.

Well, I would say my MTs were great in snow and ice over the winter.

I read up on the reviews for the Yokohama geolander MT's. they seem pretty inexpensive and have a dealer locator on thier web site. however they are a mud tire though. Reviews say they do pretty well on the street also. This is the next tire i will be buying

What would my tires be considered, a mud terrain?

They do very well in the rain, and ride about as smooth as the factory tires did.

I get my new ones in about two hours

Corey,

you've got those Cepek Moutnain Cats, right?

iirc - they are like the cooper discoverer STT, which would be yes, a MT.

Thanks Chris, I really like them.

Yeah, so much I decided to go with the same ones, only in a 285x70x17.
I will now run two sets like I have always in the past with my other vehicles.
