manual locking hubs differences

So i have 3 sets of manual locking hubs from 3 different trucks laying around so i figured that i would clean them up and put this thread together about the differences between IFS and solid axle locking hubs. Most parts of there hubs are interchangeable as we all know by now but i have yet to see a thread on the differences so here it goes.

I have hubs off of an 87 4runner, 87 pickup and, an 81 reg cab

Be forgiving some photos are a bit blurry because i am no photographer

IFS is on the left and Solid Axle is on the right

Both hub bodies are the same as you can tell there is no difference other than the wear and tear on them for being over 20 years old each

All the internals laid out

IFS hubs

Solid Axle hubs

Dials, the dials are interchangeable the only differences are the part number on the back 7C is IFS and 1B? is Solid axle

IFS is flat and the Solid Axle nobs are raise out for ease of turning

The IFS Free Wheel Hub Ring has little round holes to hold grease where as the Solid axle ones do not

The Clutch form the IFS hub is in front of the Solid Axle hub as you can see the internal splines are offset but i do believe that this would not matter if swapped to an IFS hub

The Inner Hub of the IFS has only a 27 spline count where as the Solid Axle Inner Hub has a 30 spline count there for bigger hole

The Inner Hub of an IFS has an inset ring pattern on the top of the hub where as the Solid Axle does not it just tapers off towards the splines

The solid Axle Inner Hub is slightly taller than the IFS hub due to the added length of the component

Hope this helps everyone

Good points.

As for input on your photography, look for a setting on your camera that allows for macro photography. If you let me know what camera you have, I can probably tell you how to get those close-ups in focus.
