how long can a motor sit?

I was planning on rebuilding another 3vze motor for my vehicle. But it may sit in my garage rebuilt for a while. Iv never really heard much about this and iv looked and couldnt find this but if i had it sitting after i rebuilt it would it seize? Or would it do any harm to it? providing i obiviously covered all holes to the motor etc.

As long as you use an high quality assembly lube, you should be able to store it for a while, in a cool and dry place. I would keep the storage to the least minimum that you can, though.

If you are doing a full rebuild on a 3.0, you might want to take a look at the 3.4 swap in the motor swap section. If you haven't started your rebuild, yet, it might make you reconsider your options.

Good luck, either way!

yea thats what i was thinking and coat it good and it should be fine. iv been thinking about a 3.4 swap. the 3 may be a dead hunk of iron but the 3.4 aint a lot faster. and i dont really need the xtra power so it aint worth my while. although the 3.4 has more things for mod which is good. but im not decided yet. the 3 is reliable minus the HG which can be changed to be better. so im thinking of sticking witha 3 but not sure. it will depend what i decide to put it into. im gonna go for a second gen runner if i can.

My Chevy 350 sat for a year with nothing more than fresh oil and a filter.

My HG went and I just swaped in a rebuilt 3.0 3vze that sat for over a year in the truck, outside, under pine trees. Donor trucks frame broke in half shortly after my Uncle had the engine rebuilt(10,000 miles). Engine turned over and started, first crank. The only problem I had was a hard line for the coolant system that was rusted through and leaking but the engine was solid.

I noticed you are in BC, humidity and condensation are your worst enemies so I would say you can't store it very long. Coated well with oil and assembly lube maybe a couple of years.
Good luck.

nice. well from what you guys are saying i can have one sit a while then. i was thinking of maybe building a motor first then droppn it in the vehicle i finally decide. and about the 3.4 thats true. is there any other problems with the 3.4? my moms got one in her 2000 runner with 350k km on it and no timing belt or anything for 170k km. its retarded. she never changed the oil either. i changed it once and it was so gummed up inside i had to run a flush through to clean it out. where you dump the oil in in the valve cover was gummed up like tar and i couldnt even pour oil in. she hadnt changed her oil in over 50k km. so i changed it and got it all cleaned up as besty i could and shes still going with nothing wrong. thats reliable to me. the 3.0 is reliable minus the HG. which iv heard theres ways to fix that as well now
