Angry How did I get soo lucky?!!! It's the A/F Sensor!!

Luckily, I was able to try out 3-4 different O2 sensors at no charge. Even modified the plugs and the truck ran like crap each time. Finally, I gave my parts guy @ the dealership the VIN#. He came up with 89465-80034 for the proper O2 sensor. Still the wrong one. Wrong plugs everytime.

Finally, I got the part # from the old sensor and while I was reading the first 5 digits to him, he chimes in and says, "you have an Air/Fuel sensor for CA emission. It cost a little more," he says. GREAT!!!!

$178.85 later....

Anyone found these sensors cheaper elsewhere? How often do these things go out?

Didn't we cover this in the other thread? I may be confusing you with someone else...

Yeah, the 99's have a wideband A/FR sensor which is more sensitive (and more expensive!) than a straight O2 sensor. From the URD USA site:
1999 California auto V6 4Runner; Front = Denso 234-9002
$194 shipped, which is about $1 cheaper than what you paid (unless the $179 includes tax)

Yeah, that price was with tax. You must have me confused with someone else. It's the first time I've come across this problem with my 4Runner.

Is it just the CA models that have these A/FR sensors?

I've got one of those on my 96 ca truck, too. Lucky me, I took it for a couple of test drives before I bought it and on the second one the light came on. Turned out it was a bad sensor and the dealership took it on the chin. Woo Hoo!!! They told me it was CA specific...took 2 days to get.

Sorry about the confusion... There've been a lot of O2 discussions going around these days.

Anyway... No, the A/FR vs. O2 dilemma is something that tracks with the year of the vehicle. The CA side comes into play when you start talking catalytic convertors. You have two - the other 49 states have only one.
