Gear setup...
So im sick of paying others to have gears changed or setup and now have done my research fairly well and have took many notes. I litterly have made a little notebook with many specs and what not. Even have good and bad gear pattern pictures.. I know the basic concept of setting pinion depth and back lash and preload. Just looking for some good "need to know" info which could be helpful for a first timer. I also have a few questions like where do i get the correct type of spanner wrench for toyota carrier barring screw adjusters. And how exactly can you check the preload on the carrier bearings? I read something about trying to have it around 150-200 ft/pounds? And what do you use to put on the press to press the bearing on without ruining it, also taking it off it the depth isn't correct? I know i might sound somewhat clueless and i am pretty much teaching myself but you gotta learn somehow. I wont be doing this for a bit because I'm lacking tools but im hoping soon. I will be setting up a set Of 5.29s ring and pinion in a toyota 8 inch ring gear diff 4 cylinder front axle. Also where exactly can i find a a cheap inch pound torque wrench thats not a clicking type? Please no rude comments just newbie wanting to learn. Thanks.

randy's ring and pinion has some good info. I did my first set up with directions from them and that is also where I bought most of the specialty tools that I needed. If you want one stop shopping they should have what you need or check the local parts store/harbor freight for a cheaper version. Plan on spending an entire day getting things set right. I don't have a press at my house so i took an old bearing and used a flapper wheel to open the inside diameter so I could slide it on and off the new pinion gear for setup purposes. When I got the shims figured out I had a shop press on the new bearing which was close enough that I didn't have to have it pressed off over and over to get things right.

X3 on gearinstalls.com Zuk is a good dude to deal with. I've had questions for him and he's great with email. Very friendly, knowledgeable guy and a member here. Not blaming you for wanting to learn but when it comes to gears, my desire to learn would be trumped by letting my buddy who's got a shop do it with me there so I could get an idea of how to start.
I hear Randy's sells a book on this stuff. Good luck.
P.S. Go with the v6 thirds if you can...bigger stuff inside. Just FYI. Especially with those big meats. Just saying...

X4 for ZUK. I'm all about learning how to do things myself but setting up gears isn't where you want to skimp. I could probably set up a set of gears and have nothing go wrong or toast an axle when I need it the most. If your going to regear once get someone good to set it up. If you plan to test different ratios within a few years try it yourself.
