I will tell you what I have done because of this exact issue. I have stored up gas. I know alot of people dont do this because gas prices are so high but if you think about it the problem is only going to get worse. So might as well bite the bullet now and store up now. I use for my personal gas "collection" and I sell NATO Jerry Cans, these are high quality cans not the crappy, leaking "cans" you buy at Walmart! If you are interested they are $69. Let me know!

since we got the wife the tacoma and i am now driving the 4runner,
ive started keeping track of the mpg im getting with the 4runnner.
i checked three tank fulls and i got about 16-16.75 mpg
now ive got the ECT switched on, and im going to see if it makes a difference.
1st tank full, with ECT was today, and i got 16.75 mpg
(but i did have the batt. out on fri., installing my new yellow top optima, so it might change)
i bought a six pack of fuel system detergent from costco, so i put the first one of those in today, also
i bought a new fuel filter, im going to get that in this weekend.
im hoping the cleaner and filter will help a little.
and ive heard both ways on the ECT
we will see

 

Ive been using gasbuddy.com a lot lately. i think that is an interesting thought about Japan not using as much fuel now that a lot of their cars are out of action. Any opinion on what the devastation over there will really do to the price of fuel? What do you guys think will recovery efforts drive it up or will the out of action cars drive it down?

 

i try to ignore the gas prices and just enjoy driving my truck. but it cost me 50 bucks to fill up tank the other day! hard to ignore that...especially since i'm a broke college kid. i average anywhere from 230-250 miles per tank in the winter because of driving in 4 wheel in the snow, letting it warm up and so on. but in the summer i can get upwards of 320-330 miles per tank. so it's not too bad. hey, it could be a heck of a lot worse! (for anyone wondering what motor i have it's the 3vze. 18-20 mpg in the summer)

 

I hate when gas jumps .10 overnight...with everything that's been happening in Libya it's been doing that lately. Even though Libya supplies a minuscule fraction of North American Oil, fear is driving the price of Brent crude to levels not seen since '08...now if Saudi Arabia starts experiencing unrest, we'll see some legitimately skyrocketing prices! I don't even want to think about that.
Northwest Arkansas generally has some of the cheapest fuel in the country, and I filled up for 3.43 this afternoon. I have a Kawasaki Ninja to ride when the weather is decent, as much as I love the ol' 4Runner, you can't pass up a consistent 65 MPG (and a pretty fun ride too, no more struggling to just keep up with traffic)

theres a few VW rabbits with the diesels on CL, they get like 45mpg.

 

$80 a month wow!! im spending $80 a week in my 89 4cyl .. like wabbit i dont really pay attention to much to the price, i need it ,so i buy it .. i do get $400 a month from work for gas though..

I'm not sure you'd get many more miles to that gallon, but I would definitely get the Hilux if you have a chance...i've always loved the early 70's Toyotas.

If getting better gas milage is your goal, get a small cheap econocar and keep the 4Runner for fun. Or do what I did and get a motorcycle...just ride safely and don't die on it.

@ $80 bucks a month. Welcome to life, I pay $150 a WEEK for gas. I fill up about every 2-3 days, or every 250 miles, and fork over 60 big ones.

 

Gas maybe expensive here in the ak but good thing bout Fairbanks you can ride your sled or 4 wheeler just bout any where in town you want to go even work dog sled trails are awesome for that. Try spending 1200 to drive the alcan home to ak got in yesterday and finally unglued my foot from the floor made ut in three days with snow pack ice roads and storms

Wow $600/month? You could make payments on a fuel efficient car and probably come out ahead with the savings from day 1.

 

I just got back from the Carribean. Gas on St. Lucia and Barbados was over $6.00 US a gallon. Airline tickets went up 15% in the past week. Where I live in Nor Cal is typically higher than anywhere in the lower 48. Called a friend of mine last night who said it was $4.37 in Eureka.

A $1 price increase costs me at least $80 a month ya dipsticks just on my Tundra!

I fill up at LEAST 3 Toyotas a week, 99 Tacoma, 08 Tundra and the 11 4Runner, so if you figure 55 gallons per week that's $200/week.

I'm paying almost as much as you. I fill up every 2 days about 35 bucks a tank. First gens have tiny tanks.

My bright idea was to buy a miata to save gas, but then I realized my wife can't drive the first gen without power steering. so now she just saves gas and I don't have to drive her to work...

 

If anyone is interested in hedging the cost of gas you can buy shares of USL on the NYSE. It is an ETF that tracks oil futures, when oil goes higher you make money, oil goes down you lose money. Just beware there is some bad tax accounting paper work if these shares are held in an account with tax consequences so its best to buy it in an IRA.

 

Bike riding! I live less than a mile from work and ride everywhere I can anyways. Cut down on spending in every way and barely drive any more... It's probably better for my aging truck anyways.
