Engines and axles?

I'm thinking about a new 4runner (it would be nice to have 4 doors lol). my main consideration is the engine and future sas possibility. i know that the 3.4l was introduced around 95 and I have heard that later model trucks and 4runners cant use the 80s solid front axles. was there a particular model that had the 3.4 and that can use an 80s axle (referring to years, not the fzj80)? i have searched some but it seems the answer eludes me. thanks for any input!

The 79-85 mini truck and 60-97 Land Cruisers used a passenger side drop axle.

1995.5 to current Tacomas and 1996 to current 4Runners all have a drivers side drop axles.

However, the T100 has a passenger side drop. You could use the transfer case from the T100 behind a 96+ 3.4L 4Runner.

Only problem with an 85 axle under a 3rd gen 4Runner is the width.

The 85 axle is 55" wide
The 3rd gen 4Runner rear is 60.75" wide

If you like the 3rd gen body style go with that and throw under either a diamond axle or a wagoneer Dana 44.

If you like the 2nd gen swap in a 3.4 and use an 85 front axle.

People have put the mini truck axle under tacomas and it did not look that bad. Here is one on pirate http://www.pirate4x4.com/forum/showt...2wd+sas&page=2

With 1.5" wheel spacers it measures 58.5" inset about an inch compared to the tacoma rear.

Personally I would use a FJ60 front axle it is 58" and you can space it out wider if you like. It also has a 9.5 differential which is much stronger that the mini truck 8" differential. With longs the differential becomes the weak link which I thought wasn't to nice seeing how they are $$$. Also the rear differential from a FJ80 came with an elocker which will fit into the FJ60. They also look really cool under a 3rd gen 4runner
