5VZE (3rd gen 4runner) is probably going to be the easiest swap. It generates around 170 horsepower and 230 ft/lbs torque.
1UZFE () V8 from a lexus would be one of the more awesome swaps, generating around 250 horsepower. Check out UZSwap.com and Lextreme.com for more details on that.
There's the Japanese Diesels which are pretty neat, but when you think about it, there is no part support for diesel engines in the United States; everything would have to be imported (probably not too cheap in the long run).
You could do the 5MGE, 7MGE, 7MGTE, 1JZ, or 2JZ straight six from the Supra's and lexus.. It's been done a few times and generates awesome results. Check supracharged.com for more info on that.

also the Chevy 4.3L is always an option. Depending on your location you can pick one of those up for <500 bucks. A place near me had one with less than 20,000 miles on it for 300 bucks, but i'm too damn poor to even afford that right now, lol.

Other options would also include GM 350 V-8 or Ford 305 V-8. Both are relatively cheap, and have huge aftermarket support.

My biggest recommendation would be the Toyota 3.4L V-6, excellent engine and good aftermarket with the supercharger if you need more power later.

Anyone know whos' done one and some better info. Spent hours searching, I have a customer with a 91 V6 4runner, motors smoked so we are throwing around the 4.3L swap. Detailed info is sketchy at best.

Thanks

Simon

Hi guys,

I'm reviving this thread, as the 22R in my '81 is getting long in the tooth and using a lot of oil/smoking. #3 has only +/- 100 lbs of compression others are around 135-140 lbs.

What's the easiest/cheapest engine swap/repair/replace ? Try to find another 22R? Rebuild the current motor (already put a crank saver kit in it 50k miles ago...)?

My sons are using my old truck (I bought it new in 1981 when I graduated from high school) as a way for them to learn some mechanic work and as a father-and-sons project. It is a 4WD SR5 (on it's 3rd tranny, as you might imagine, LOL!).

Thanks,

Ben

i love my 3.4, great motor 190 HP 220 ft lbs torque.

another candidate imo would be a 3rz 4cyl 150 HP, keep it all toyota unless you go VW TDI diesel.

look up toy only swaps and go through the offroad tech and fab tab to get to the engine swap forum on this site.
