Electric Cooling Fan - 91 4-Runner??????
#3
I used to have the Flex-A-Lite black magic fan on my truck but I had overheating problems. I would overheat on long uphill runs or if I was crawling - basically any time the engine was under load, working hard. The Flex-A-Lite fan would be running but just not pulling enough air. I suspected everything but the fan. Replaced the radiator, hoses, thermostat, and finally in desperation put the factory fan and shroud back in - and that solved the problem. I later found I'm not the only one with this problem and many folks had bailed on their Flex-A-Lite fans. Some folks have good luck with electric fans but for the hassle and no percieved increase in performance from the engine - I went back to the factory set-up.

Well, I guess I'll find out this weekend. Good thing my brother works at the autoparts store where I got everything!

taurus fan in mine havent overheated once! taurus fan puts out up to 4200 cfm
they also can be bought for 50 bucks
i do use the felx a lite vsc ( varible speed controler)
which is a must the taurus fan uses 80 amps
a varible speed controler ( any brand) will slowly bring up the speed and not draw 80 amps at start up

I have the pep boys special. I think it was the top of the line pile you can get from pep boys at a whopping 14"s. I guess it depends on what motor you have, but my best upgrade was to a heavy duty 3 core aluminum radiator. I run about 185* in dead traffic and 95* outside. Most of the time I run with the fan off. This is a 22r though not a 3slow. I love my e fan.

I have the taurus fan running without a "speed controller". I use a cheap autozone adjustable temp controller ran to a standard Chevy style starter solenoid and then straight to the fan, on high speed. I have a 60 amp alternator, and the voltage never drops below 13.8v, even on startup.

i used a couple permacools, and did a custom fan shroud for my 3rd gen. For trigger, i used a Honda (shhh) 190°f switch, then for power a couple relays, and a circuit breaker.
I can say so far no overheating or anything close, and the AC has never worked so well!

To me, it would be worth the extra $170-270 to not get bit.

Actually, I already have a BM-150 laying around, used to be in my '83 RX-7.

how much for a NEW taurus fan (aftermaket okay) ?
where is the temp-switch on a '91 4runner that turns the fan on ?? (I need to check it)
I have the 3slow and it runs hot on warm days running at low rpm. Cools when revv'ed to 4-grand. Side note, this 4Runner appears to have a normal engine-driven fan with a hydraulic fan-clutch (just replaced) AND a small electric fan. Don't think that big taurus fan will fit in place of this small electric one...
Thanks in advance for any help....

There is no temp switch to turn on an mechanical fan. They're clutch actuated.
If you do the Taurus fan swap, you'll need to pick up an electric fan controller, kinda like these:

The "small electric fan" you speak of is for your A/C.

I'm sorry, I meant the small electric fan that on my '91 4runner sits in front of the A/C condenser.
Am I the only one that has a Hydraulic fan clutch and also a small electric fan too ???
My little electric fan doesn't work, but the Hydraulic Fan clutch was just replaced, and I still overheat now and then. Where is the 'switch' or whatever turns on this little electric fan ??
Thanks guys !
