Electric 4 wheeling

Chrysler has unvailed an extended range electric Jeep with 4 electric motors, one on each wheel. Appearantly its a hybrid (has a gas engine too).

Not sure how that will handle water crossings

I'm sure lots of very fuel efficient vehicles will be out in a few years. I'm holding off buying any new vehicle for at least 2-3 years if I can.

They also have a hybrid Durango, it was in one of last months mags. In my op, most new four wheel drives are just for show anyway. When was the last time anyone saw a H2 on the narrow trails getting scratched. If four by's go the way as hybrids, creek runs, solid axle swaps and big tires will go out the window.

The things that worry me most about buying a used hybrid is the battery life and the cost of replacing all of them. If it had new batteries it would be better.

A plug-in hybrid, possibly with solar panels to charge the batteries while sitting at work all day in the sun would be sweet.

I'd also like to see some liquid natual gas options. Maybe a hybrid nat gas/electric vehicle.

I was looking into solar panels for my house and naturally was concerned about that too. The research I did at the time showed that those panels where fine up to about golf ball size hail. I am hoping in the next few years there will be improvements and new developments in solar panels.

I don't think (on average) Dallas has more hail than we do here in central OK, but I know you guys did get hit extra hard the last few years. I had $9000 worth of hail damage to my BMW, so I understand your side of the problem.

Electric motors would be IDEAL for rockcrawling as they have essentially infinite torque at low RPM's. Plus, with hub mounted motors, there's no driveshafts or anything to get in the way. The ONLY problem I see is that if you have electrical issues out in the bush, you are FUBAR - big time.

It's very easy to seal an electric motor to make it submersible.

Its not a hybrid, and it doesnt have 4 in wheel motors, it has one electric motor.

It has a small gas engine that fuctions as a generator to charge the batteries.

40 mile range on electric only. 400 mile range using 8 gallons of gas.

298 torque. Sign me up.

Electric motors will run underwater with no waterproofing. Although it will get badly corroded when it dries out. Its the other electronic parts that will short out if they get wet.

The Jeep EV Range-extended Electric Vehicle uses an electric motor, an advanced lithium-ion battery system, and a small gasoline engine with an integrated electric generator to produce additional energy to power the electric-drive system when needed. The 200 kW (268 horsepower) electric motor generates 400 N•m (295 lb.-ft.) of torque. With approximately eight gallons of gasoline, the Jeep EV has a range of 400 miles, including 40 miles of zero fuel-consumption, zero-emissions, all-electric operation.

“We are also exploring four-wheel-drive, in-wheel electric motors to demonstrate the full reach of ENVI’s advanced electric-drive technologies,” said Rhodes.

Ok, I guess they just said they were working on that part. I didn't catch all of it.

That's interesting the gas engine is just to run a generator... they didn't mention that on the CNBC interview I saw. Thanks for the link.
