Camper/Bed ideas

Been reading around and I'm thinking of bed lining or carpeting my bed and sealing off the bed area to make it into a proper sleeping quarter. An idea also came across my head of removing the rear window of the cab and the window of the camper and connecting them together that way you could just crawl back there without having to get out. Just thought I'd share for some ideas and input. Pic of my rig-

I'm going to say, no don't try that.

several reasons. I know this topic because I've done what you want to do....

Most important was the amount of exhaust fumes I used to get when I would drive with my cap on and 2 sets of sliders (cap and cab) open....something about the exhaust getting caught up in the "wake" behind the vehicle and coming through the openings. No matter ow well "sealed" you are, you aren't totally air-tight.

Years ago....before you were born probably ....when I 1st got my truck, I also bought a sweet cap for it......don't ask for pics because I only have 1 and it's a photo...no digital cameras 18 years ago...and I don't even havce a working card reader anymore........OK....nice cap, carpeted bedsides (held on w/ velcro).....piece of plywood covered with thick carpet made for an EXTREMELY SWEET drive-in vehicle and etc.....

I know there is some sort of spring loaded collar looking thingy that you can use to span the opening between the cab and the cap to make it water-tight, but the noise was / is terrible and like I said, the fume were bad aqnd worse yet the fumes you can't smell (carbon monoxide)....

if anything i'd hercaliner the bed then set it up so you could make it a sleeper... but with the whole basis of the 4runner sleeper system... like a fold out bed platform so you can still store stuff during the traveling portion of the trip... then set up camp and flip out the bed... theres nothing better than having a truck with multiple capabilities... and when you set it up for one use its gonna take away from the amazing resale value of the toyota truck... make it something thats easily removable but badass at the same time.... id vote for a fold out bed thingy and use really good sleepin bags (that could be used on hiking trips

They used to do the same sort of thing. 'Trekker' ring a bell? I think it'd be cool if you did it like that. It might cost a little and it'd be alot of fab work. You could do it like you were talking about. I'd put some sort of rubber cap down between the bed and cab and then do a large rubber ring between the cab and canopy. make sure you have a good seal on the canopy and it could work and be pretty warm. I'd do bedliner rather than carpet. easier to clean. just my two cents.

My carpet was attached to a piece of plywood that lifted right out....there was no such thing as bedliner back then. the carpeted walls were a kit I bought and were held in by little tabs of velcro. Once you had the cap off, it was very easy to convert it back to a truck.

None yet. Still looking at my options. I will probably end up keeping the camper to sleep in ect.. Just trying to figure out where to store all my tools and gear since i can't put a tool box back there that is easily accessible with the camper in place.

You could do a drawer type system like some of us have in our Runners. But if you want to remove the windows so it is open between the cab. I lot of the mini truck guys do that for systems and if you go to a cap/bed cover dealer they will have the rubber that you can run around the opening to seal it..
I say go for it

The drawer setup crossed my mind as well. I've seen a couple of people with 4 runners pull it off. I don't think i will connect the cab to the camper as i looked at the rear window yesterday and it seemed a little small.

If you do decide to put a roll/spray on bed liner in and are still planning on having a dry place to sleep in the bed I would suggest not putting it on the bed rails. It makes it next to impossible to get a complete watertight seal. As far as having to have a place to store your gear and tools in the same place is concerned; I have seen how some guys have made like a two level setup in their bed to were the tools and gear are stored in the bottom half and then you sleep on top half with trap doors in the floor to access the gear more easily.

Thanks those links were very helpful! Seems like that is the route I will end up taking. Just need to wait until the summer to get started on it as I'm in college right now.
