CA engine swap Q's?

hey all, I've heard that when swapping an engine in CA you need same year or newer motor.... but what about JDM import engines? does the rules still apply to engines like that?

JDM engines in general have worst smog requirements than Cali. Most fail because of this. End of the day, you can always contest CARB as long as the engine smogs w/in the right specs.

BTW, this info is from personal friends and reading an article in Import Tuner or similar mag.
