bad alternator or battery?

Hey guys/gals.

For the last week I've been experiencing almost constant dead batteries, to the point where I just bring jumper cables in case it dies. I took it to the gas station today and had a mechanic at the service station check out out the charging system. He made a claim that's it's my alternator because it's only putting out 13.6 after he charged the battery from a big tender and turned it off and took a reading.

I asked him for a estimate and he quoted me at 300$ So I decided to tackle the issue myself. Now before I do that do you guys concur with what he said? I do because after the charge it was running great for hours, then I went to the gas station and the truck died again.

What are some good alternator brands ya'll would recommend me ? I never done a alternator before myself, it looks pretty straight forward. Only thing i'm worried about is getting the fan belt back on correctly with the adjustment tensioner . What amp output would you recommend for a 94 Toyota 4 Runner V.6?
